FHTM Held the Second Session of this Semester’s Distinguished Scholar Forum of Hospitality and Tourism —— Trends, Issues and Perspectives in Hospitality and Tourism Studies

The Faculty of Hospitality and Tourism Management (FHTM) of Macau University of Science and Technology (M.U.S.T.) held the Second Session of this semester’s Distinguished Scholar Forum of Hospitality and Tourism on April 14th, 2023, at D Hall. Professor Xiao Honggen, Assistant Dean of the School of Hotel and Tourism Management at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University was invited as the guest speaker and provided an insightful lecture entitled “Trends, Issues and Perspectives in Hospitality and Tourism Studies”. Professor Ben K. Goh, Dean of FHTM, and Program Directors Dr. Zhang Yang, Dr. Feng Yan, Dr. Wong Weng Chou, and Dr. Brenda Yang, more than 300 teachers, and students attended the lecture. This seminar was sponsored by the Macao Foundation.

On behalf of FHTMs’ teachers and students, Dean Ben K. Goh extended a warm welcome to Professor Xiao Honggen and thanked him for amplifying academic communication and exchange between the two universities. Professor Xiao Honggen has made significant research achievements in the fields of the tourism and hotel industry. It is hoped that students can cherish this rare opportunity to expand their thinking on the development of hospitality and tourism.

Professor Xiao Honggen first reviewed the development process of the tourism and hotel industry and summarized the research problems in the field. He conducted a detailed analysis of the gaps and deficiencies. He also looked into the future development of the hotel and tourism industry from various aspects, including service construction, management systems, and personnel training. He used rigorous theories and data to demonstrate the achievements of the industry's development and put forward constructive suggestions in response to post-epidemic recovery and development in the hotel and tourism industry. Professor Xiao Honggen's lecture was profound and enlightening, and the students in attendance were deeply inspired.

During the Q&A session, students felt inspired by the lecture and asked many questions about the future of the hotel and tourism industry. Professor Xiao Honggen encouraged students to have an inclusive thinking paradigm and dynamic perspective to approach the issues. He also had an extended discussion on hot issues of tourism and hospitality with students, which may have facilitated students’ understanding of the industry's future development. This lecture provided a deep academic exchange platform for M.U.S.T and The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and played a positive role in the discipline design and professional development.
