Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Liu Jieyi,
Permanent Representative of PRC to the UN Visits MUST

Mr. Liu Jieyi, Permanent Representative of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) to the United Nations (UN), Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, visited Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST) on March 16th, 2015. He and others were warmly welcomed by President Chair Professor Liu Liang and Senior Vice President Professor Zhang Shuguang.

In their cordial discussion, President Liu first introduced to Ambassador Liu the on-going event of the day—2015 MUST Campus Career Fair and the employment and development of graduating students. Afterwards, President Liu gave an overall report on the university’s size, student population and general development, also on the features of each faculty/school and recent progress, emphasizing on the support and assistance MUST has received from the Central Government of China and all sectors of society without which MUST could not progress so rapidly. Ambassador Liu shared his feelings about this first and short visit to MUST that despite of the short stay, he has experienced in person the youthful vigor and fresh creativity of MUST, he was positive about the university’s past achievement and he was very confident about the university’s future progress.

After the meeting, Ambassador Liu was invited to give a speech on “The International Situation and China’s Multilateral Diplomacy” as part of the “Ambassadorial Lecture Series” which has been organized by MUST and sponsored by Macau Foundation.

In his speech, Ambassador Liu mainly introduced to the students the objectives of UN for 2015 in some key work areas and the important role that Chinese delegation should play there. 2015 being a very special year marks the 70th anniversary of the establishment of UN, the 70th anniversary of the victory of the World Anti-Fascist War, and also the 70th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression. As a result, the UN work will unfold around the two themes “peace” and “development” which are also the themes of this era.

Concerning the “peace” work, Ambassador Liu introduced to the students three conferences taking place in February, May and September of 2015 respectively. UN will take the opportunity of the special occasion of celebrating the 70th anniversary of its establishment to reaffirm the purposes and principles of the UN Chapter in terms of maintaining world peace and development and to safeguard the victorious fruits of the World Anti-Fascist War obtained by people since World War II. Regarding the “development” work, the UN will formulate the 2016-2030 development agenda which the international community will plan according to the guiding principles, specific objectives, implementation means and progress assessment.

The Ambassador had also answered a series of questions raised by the students during the Q & A session. Speaking at a time when MUST was celebrating the 15th anniversary, Ambassador pointed out that the significant achievements MUST has gained in the past 15 years cannot be separated from China’s rapidly improved international status. He then encouraged students to be more passionate about serving the nation or the SAR, and to make the best of Macao environment by developing multilingual skills.

Other guests present at the lecture included Mr. Cai Siping, Deputy Commissioner, The Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China in Macao, Ms. Yang Yi, First Secretary, Permanent Mission of the PRC to the United Nations, Mr. Li Xiaoquan, Deputy Director-General of Department of Public Diplomacy and Information, The Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China in Macao. Right before the lecture, Senior Vice President Zhang Shuguang of MUST presented a certificate of appreciation to Ambassador Liu the speaker and took a photo with him.
