1st Macau International Film Festival Successfully Held

The Opening Ceremony of the 1st Macau International Film Festival was held on April 25, 2015 at Galaxy Macau TM. This event was co-organized by Macau Films & Television Productions and Culture Association and Macau Academy of Cinematic Arts of Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST). With theme of film remastering, this festival mainly presented digitally remastered classic movies to local and visiting film practitioners, scholars, artists and movie lovers who gathered in Macau on this grand occasion.

Seminar Series on MUST Campus
To promote research on cinematic arts and development of film industry in Macau

During the film festival between April 24th and 28th , MUST organized the 1st Macau International Film Festival--MUST Seminar Series, offering a total of six seminars to the public. The seminar topics are Speech by Director of Wolf Totem, Chinese Films and Film Directors, Films in the Digital Era, Establishing Regional Film Culture in Regions with Cultural Diversity, Chinese Films: Opportunities and Challenges, and American Independent Films. Speakers are well-known industry practitioners and scholars in the film field including renowned French director Jean Jacques Annaud, prominent Chinese director and scholar Xie Fei, famous Korean lighting technician LEE Yong-gi, Researcher of China Film Archive Li Xun, Deputy Director of CCTV6 Movie Channel Program Center Lu Hongshi, and Director Liu Xuan and Producer Jenson Rong from American Micro-film Association. They were invited to share their ideas and experience regarding films and film making with MUST students and interested parties in Macau. The goal of the seminar series is to promote research on cinematic arts and development of film industry in Macau.

MUST Establishing “Macau Academy of Cinematic Arts”

MUST established “Macau Academy of Cinematic Arts” (the “Academy”) in 2014 which becomes the first research institute of cinematic arts affiliated with a higher educational institution. The “Academy” aims at building “communication, research and service” international platforms so as to make the leap-frogging of Macau’s cinematic arts research and development of film industry possible. The “Academy” will conduct long-term research in fields such as the application and innovation of cinematic technologies, financing management of film production, service and management of film production, film distribution, business incubator of film production, etc.. MUST boasts of competitive teaching and research teams in areas of humanities and arts, information and technology, business and law and is sure to provide sufficient and high-quality support to the “Academy”.

School of Business of MUST and the “Academy” will jointly offer a PHD program in Film and Media Management to foster senior professionals who are both highly familiar with the most advanced operation of the film industry in the world and well versed in management theories and techniques. In addition, through the “Academy” MUST intends to create more job opportunities for local talents in the film industry or related industries. MUST plans to offer training programs for the local talents, to organize study trips abroad to observe and gain hands-on experience, and to prepare students for assistance opportunities brought by incoming international film-making teams.

In the year marking both the 120th anniversary of the birth of international cinema and the 110th anniversary of the birth of Chinese film, MUST recruited 9 film practitioners and scholars to join Macau Academy of Cinematic Arts, so as to make joint efforts to foster new research talents in cinematic arts. These 9 film practitioners and scholars are: Honorary Director Jean Jacques Annaud, who won the Tiantan Award for Best Director at the fifth Beijing International Film Festival; Director Jiang Wen, famous film director in China and Lead Actor in Year of Fate; Distinguished Professor Xie Fei, renowned film director in China and former Vice President of Beijing Film Academy; Visiting Professor Li Shaohong, famous film director in China; Visiting Professor Sun Xianghui, Director and Curator of China Film Archive; Visiting Professor Li Xun, film history researcher of China Film Archive; Visiting Professor Lu Hongshi, Deputy Director of CCTV6 Movie Channel Program Center; Visiting Professor Li Tao, Deputy Director of Business Development of China Film Archive; and Visiting Associate Professor Li Yu, Deputy Director of Culture Research and Deputy Director of the Graduate School, China Film Archive.

With such an excellent teaching and research team, MUST’s Macau Academy of Cinematic Arts will surely provide intellectual support for cinematic research and industrial development as well as foster a new generation of professionals and artists in cinematic research and management.
