MUST Bound to Shine Continuously in Teaching and Research
Macau University of Science and Technology held the 2015/2016 Opening Ceremony at 11.00 am on September 12 (Saturday) at the Gymnasium of Block J. More than 2000 teachers and students attended the ceremony, making the occasion a happy and grand gathering. At the ceremony, the University gave out scholarships and awards for students, including the Dean’s List Scholarships, the Outstanding Award of Culture & Scholarship, the Outstanding Award of Social Services, and the Outstanding Award of Health & Sports, as well as the Bank of China Research Award and the Teaching Excellence Awards for teachers.
For the new academic year, more than 40 new faculty members joined MUST, including one vice president and three deans; the University was also able to invite many national and international renowned experts and scholars to join the University’s research team, aiming to further advance the University’s research development. What’s more cheering is that there has been a significant improvement at the quality of the newly enrolled students for MUST, which has demonstrated the extensive recognitions given by the social communities to the University’s teaching, academics and research.
At his speech at the Opening Ceremony, Chair Professor, President Liu Liang noted that living in a time that is characterized by the simultaneous co-existence of multiplicity, opportunities, and challenges, college students have to take up the historical commitment to create the future world and to carry on the human civilization and excellent traditional culture; to fulfill such responsibilities requires, in addition to professional knowledge and capabilities, humanistic spirit and qualities. President Liu Liang advised the students of MUST, while devoting diligence to their studies, to root their heart and soul in humanistic spirit and install in themselves a humanistic heart, a humanistic mind, and a humanistic character, to discipline themselves with noble values and world views, to respect and appreciate others’ strengths, to take as their lifelong pursuits the humanistic qualities of universal values: gratitude, acceptance, humility, integrity, and rationality, strike towards a life that rests on ultimate kindness, and therefore to lead a respectable, valuable, fruitful and exciting life.
Following President Liu Liang’s speech, a teacher’s representative spoke and encouraged the students to challenge themselves, explore the new study environment, set up goals, take actions, and communicate and interact with their teachers so that they can improve their ability at analysis, problem-solving, and independent thinking, and thus own a fulfilling and meaningful college life. Afterwards, two representatives of the new students spoke and expressed their gratitude toward the University for providing them the good learning environment and opportunities, expressed their excitement at the upcoming college life, shared their goals, and asked the fellow students to try hard to find the right starting points for themselves, and jointly embark on a colorful learning journey in their life.
In the end, with the music performed live by the MUST Art Troupe, teachers and students sang the University anthem together, and the Opening Ceremony arrived at a happy and successful end.
