In celebration of the University’s 16th Anniversary, the Faculty of Hospitality and Tourism Management of M.U.S.T. had the pleasure to invite Ms. Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes, Director of Macau Government Tourism Office, to give a lecture at the University, talking about the current situation and prospect of Macau’s tourism; the lecture took place at N101 lecture hall of the library building in the afternoon of March 30, 2016, and was sponsored by the Macau Foundation.

Director Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes first shared her insights with the MUST teachers and students on the current situation of Macau’s tourism industry. She briefly analysed the fall in the number of visitors to Macau in 2015 as well as other related industry problems, elaborated on the positioning of Macau’s tourism and the policies for tourism development in 2016, and accounted the steps and methods for tourism development as is laid out by the relevant plans and blueprints. She’s also expressed her expectations on certain festival events and the convention industry, giving the students a clearer view on the development direction and vision of Macau’s tourism industry. At the lecture, the Director also gave an introduction to the electronic administration campaign promoted by the Macau Government Tourism Office, which is made to improve the quality of tourism services; the Office also campaigns for smart tourism and for practice of diversifying Macau’s tourism products so as to enhance Macau’s tourism profile.

Director Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes has long been committed to promotion of Macau’s tourism. In recent years, in order to motivate the Macau residents and tourists to explore Macau’s urban appeal, her office launched the campaign, “Step Out, Experience Macau's Communities - Walking Tour Routes”, to promote community tourism and smart tourism, making available eight walking tour routes for the tourists; the campaign moves the tourists to engage in more in-depth tours into the communities, which could effectively split the tourist flow and invigorate the development of community tourism. In 2015, to stand in alignment with the Government’s positioning of making Macau a world tourism and leisure centre and to elevate the appeal of Macau’s tourism and add cultural elements to Macau’s tourism, the Macau Government Tourism Office held the “2015 Macau Light Festival –Journey of Lights” and the “Valentine’s Day Fantasia 2016 – The Fairytale of Lights”, featuring light installations and 3D mapping show themed as “Cinderella’s Glass Slipper”. The events were warmly responded and highly recognized by the Macau residents and the tourist.
