MUST Held Summit on Frontiers Science & Technology
Facilitating Sustainable Development of Science & Technology

Jointly organized by Macau University of Science and Technology and Macao Association for Promotion of Science and Technology, the “Summit on Frontiers Science & Technology” was held in the morning of April 1 at the N101 conference room of the University. The Summit invited three renowned scholars, who have received Honorary Doctor Degree from M.U.S.T., to give keynote speeches; they are nanotechnology expert, President Bai Chun Li of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Nobel laureate for Physiology or Medicine, Director of the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry, Germany, Prof. Erwin Neher, and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chief Commander and Chief Designer of China’s Chang’e Space Program, Prof. Ye Pei Jian. More than 300 MUST teachers and students and experts and scholars from the science community attended the Summit.

The Summit has invited Mr. Yao Jian, Deputy Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macau S.A.R., Mr. Pan Yun Dong, Deputy Commissioner of the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China in the Macao S.A.R., Mr. Chui Sai Peng, Vice Chairman of the Macao Science and Technology Committee and President of Macao Association for Promotion of Science and Technology, Mr. Ma Chi Ngai, Chairman of Administration Council of Macao Science and Technology Development Fund (FDCT), Mr. Chan Ka Ho, Acting Vice Director of Macao Tertiary Education Services Office ofMacao S.A.R, Chair Professor Liu Liang, President of M.U.S.T., and four MUST honorary doctors to officiate the Opening Ceremony of the Summit.

When addressing the Opening Ceremony, President Liu Liang noted that as an international city that has a long history, where the oriental culture meets with the western culture, Macau has been blessed with a steady society and a prosperous economy. Ever since it returned to its motherland, the Macau S.A.R. government has been attaching great importance to development in education, science and technology, and medical treatments, and has made impressive achievements. Macau University of Science and Technology was established following Macau’s returning to its motherland; since its inception, the University and the S.A.R. have mutually witnessed each other’s growth; today, the University has grown to become the largest-scale comprehensive university in Macau, offering a full-fledged set of programs: literature, science, law, management, business, medicine, pharmacology, art, communication, tourism, languages, etc.. Also, to stand in better alignment with the Macau S.A.R. government’s policy priorities, which were identified for the purpose of implementing the moderately diversified and sustainable development of economy, M.U.S.T. takes Chinese medicine, food and drug safety, smart city and information security, system control science and engineering, and urban environment as its key areas, and pursues innovative research, aiming to provide excellent quality services for the society and facilitate the multi-dimensional development of the local industries. President Liu Liang hopes that the attendees of the event could get inspired by the Summit, which is held in this amazing city where the eastern culture meets with the western culture, and that the Summit could enable them to develop a multi-dimensional vision and a more open view on the relevant issues, and make greater contributions for the advancement of science and technology of the Chinese nation and all mankind.

Vice Chairman of the Macao Science and Technology Committee and President of Macao Association for Promotion of Science and Technology, Mr. Chui Sai Peng also delivered a speech at the Ceremony. He noted that since its inception, the Macao Association for Promotion of Science and Technology has been deeply involved in the popularization of science and technology for the general public especially the youth. The Association’s partnership with Macau University of Science and Technology has been long and successful. While making relentless efforts in bringing excellence to Macau, the University has also been actively involved in providing services for the development of Macau society.  The University’s State Key Laboratory of Quality Research in Chinese Medicines (M.U.S.T. partner lab) has helped to attract top-level scholars and experts to work in Macau and has become an ideal platform to train up young minds. He felt proud in the Macau S.A.R. government’s effort in creating the best environment for the young minds toward the pursuit of science and related fields. With the joining force of the government, the educational institutions and the professional associations, he felt sure that we would have brighter and younger minds contributing to the well-being of our society.


At the Q&A session, the three honorary doctors engaged in heated discussions with MUST teachers and students.

The Summit offered three keynote speeches: “China’s Science and Technology and Innovations”, given by President Bai Chun Li of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, sharing with us the tremendous achievements of China’s science and technology and innovations as well as its grand visions, “Modulation of Short-term Plasticity at the Calyx of Held Synapse”, given by Prof. Erwin Neher, Laureate for Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, Director of the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry, Germany, the first “Einstein Chair Professor” of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and professor of the University of Göttingen, Germany, bringing us to a better and deeper understanding of the biggest “dark box” in the universe, the brain, and “Studies on Prominent Science and Technology Problems of Manned Deep Space Probe”, giving us profound insights on cutting-edge science and technology problems in deep space probe. At the Q&A session, the MUST teachers initiated heated discussions with the speakers; the event concluded on a warm and rewarding note.
