MUST Library Holds “Chinese Stone Rubbings of Southern Style Exhibition”

Library of Macau University of Science and Technology holds “Chinese Stone Rubbings of Southern Style Exhibition” from May 26th to June 25th, 2016. Rubbing is the traditional practice of creating an image of surface features of a stone on paper. The image accurately records features such as contents and inscribed patterns so that the inscriptions can be preserved. The exhibition is co-organized by MUST Library and Sun Yat-Sen Library of Guangdong Province. The latter prepares dozens of rubbing collections for display, which reflects two thousand years’ history in China from Qin Dynasty to Republic of China period. Experts are invited to the exhibition to introduce the technique of making rubbings. The audience can not only have the experience of making rubbings under the experts’ instruction, but also get to know China’s history, tradition and culture.

The opening ceremony was held on the afternoon of May 26th, 2016 at MUST Library. Chair Prof. Pang Su Seng, Vice President of MUST said that rubbing is an important mean of education and cultural preservation in ancient China. It is hoped that the exhibition may introduce the history and culture of Southern China to the teachers and students from MUST and the local people, and uphold the patriotic spirit. He stresses that MUST teachers and students should explore the universal objective laws, take responsibility for the country, the society, and the nation, and understand their position in history so that they can make the right decision and choices.

Mr. Ni Jun Ming, Deputy Librarian of Sun Yat-Sen Library of Guangdong Province said that as a combination of history, literature, calligraphy, and art, stone inscription is a vital medium for preserving civilization, a significant part of history and culture, and an important resource of calligraphy. He hopes that this exhibition may enable the students and visitors to understand the technique of rubbing and at the same time draw the public’s attention on protecting this valuable heritage.
