Distinguished alumni share career planning with students

Two distinguished alumni: Mr. Leong Sun Iok, directly-elected Councilor of Macau’s sixth Legislative Council and Mr. Kwong Wai Man, President of Macau Electrical and Mechanical Engineer Association, were invited to be speakers of the final session of Ability Development and Cultivation of Youth, a newly introduced selective course, on 15th December, 2017 in N101. The course is hosted by the Department of General Education and Student Affairs Office at Macau University of Science and Technology.

The session was commenced with a brief but solemn presenting of the letter of gratitude to the two alumni by Vice President Pang Chuan on behalf of the University.

University offers a rich experience of various societies and activities, the dialogues started with this topic, the speakers gave their respective opinions and suggestions. They advised students to join societies based on their own interest, and search for suitable societies with this purpose. This is a good opportunity to get in touch with the related fields, gain insights from the societies, and a preview of the career prospect. The two alumni exchanged with students on views about accumulation of knowledge and development of skills during the studies in university. They suggested that in the epoch of Big Data and Cloud Computing, students should match the knowledge they studied with the technology of information sector, to learn more about the discipline that they are not familiar with by hearing, reading and understanding more. They also suggested the students to learn more about the city’s strategic orientation in the Greater Bay Area and Macau’s Smart City plan in the years to come which can be useful for planning their careers.

Taking heed of the issue of starting a business, the two alumni shared their own experiences and advices. They pointed out sacrifices and hardships are necessary when starting a business, particularly in the initial stage; every young entrepreneur should have positive attitude and be prepared for failures. They encouraged students to get well prepared by taking extra trainings on entrepreneurships offered in Macau, in order to grasp the opportunity when it comes. The speakers also shared with students on good time management and volunteering works.

The session came to a successful conclusion with a round of applause from the audience. Guests attending the session including Ms. Chu Oi Mei, Dean of Department of General Education and Vice Dean of Faculty of Hospitality and Tourism Management, and Ms Remus Wong Ka Weng, Head of Student Affairs Office, and Ms. Liu Jia, Coordinator of Pre-University Program.
