President Liu Liang Awarded Honorary Fellowship by Social Enterprise Research Academy

article12211351sChair Professor Liu Liang, President of Macau University of Science and Technology and Director of the State Key Laboratory of Quality Research in Chinese Medicine, was awarded Honorary Fellowship by the Social Enterprise Research Academy at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre on December 15, 2018.

Prof. Liu is a world leading scholar in rheumatology and immunology. He is Project Adviser for traditional medicine of World Health Organization, Convener of the 1st Working Group for Chinese Herbal Medicine and Member of the Technical Committee of ISO/TC249, and President of the Chinese Medicine Immunology Professional Committee of the World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies. Prof. Liu obtained his Ph.D. from the Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine in 1990 and served as Vice President at the university from 1997 to 2000. He joined the Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) via the Admission Scheme for Mainland Talents and Professionals, and served as the founding dean of the School of Chinese Medicine of the HKBU and as a tenure chair professor. Prof. Liu became Vice President of M.U.S.T. in July 2011 and began to serve as President from January 2013 to date.

At the citation for Prof. Liu , the Social Enterprise Research Academy praised that Prof. Liu has earned tremendous merits by virtue of the extraordinary contributions he’s made in overcoming rheumatic immune diseases, moving forward modernization and internationalization of Chinese medicine, promoting cooperation and development of higher education in Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao, and leading M.U.S.T. on a fast-growing path to become a Top 30 university in the Greater China.

When addressing the award presentation ceremony, Prof. Liu mentioned that he felt greatly honored to receive the highest honor of the Social Enterprise Research Academy – Honorary Fellowship, and would continue to do his best to fulfill his responsibilities and give back to the society. He thanked his parents for raising him and educating him, and his teachers for empowering him with professional knowledge and solving problems; he also thanked his co-workers for their trust and help, his friends who believe in and strive for the same dreams, and all the prominent social intellectuals for their support to the higher education and development of Chinese Medicine; finally, he thanked his family for their understanding and support. Prof. Liu also emphasized that higher education is an important foundation for elevating national qualities and promoting sustainable social development, the medical science is a great cause in safeguarding life quality and furthering human health, and the construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Great Bay Area has brought about historic development opportunities for the three regions. He wished that the entire society could demonstrate the social caring spirit advocated by the Social Enterprise Research Academy to join forces to train excellent talents and create a wonderful future for the development of science and technology innovations, advancement of civilizations, and human health and well-being.

The Social Enterprise Research Academy aims to elect role-models for different professions and promote the future development of Asia, by way of selecting and awarding remarkable individuals with profound social contributions and far-reaching influences. The Fellowship and Honorary Award Presentation this year was officiated by Equal Opportunities Commission Chairperson Prof. Chan Cheung-ming, and former Secretary for Education of the Hong Kong S.A.R. Government Mr. Ng Hak-kim J.P. Other winners of Honorary Fellowship include The Big Issue Managing Director John Montague and President of Taiwan Chiao Tung University Dr. Chang Mau-Chung. Alumni of the Honorary Fellowship awarded in the past years include Nobel Prize laureate Dr. Takaaki Kajita, “Father of the blue LED” Prof. Shuji Nakamura, former President of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Prof. Chan Fan-Cheong, and President of the City University of Hong Kong Prof. Kuo Way.
