On the morning of 28th March, 2019, Minister Wang Zhigang of the Ministry of Science and Technology led a delegation to visit the Macau University of Science and Technology (M.U.S.T.). The University Management including President Liu Liang, Vice President Tong Ka Lok and Vice President Jiang Zhihong warmly welcomed the Minister and the delegation and accompanied them to visit the State Key Laboratory of Quality Research in Chinese Medicines and the State Key Laboratory of Lunar and Planetary Sciences. Minister Wang was pleased to see the innovative technology platform established by these two key national laboratories of M.U.S.T. He hoped that M.U.S.T. will firmly grasp the development opportunities, further strengthen the innovation and scientific cooperation at home and abroad, cultivate more outstanding talents, and closely integrate the university and the national development strategies to play a greater role of “internationalization” at the frontier of science and technology.

During the meeting, President Liu made a presentation on the development of M.U.S.T., highlighting the University adherence to the “duality of teaching and research” model, actively importing talents and establishing a national platform. The University will rely on the new situation of the country and the construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, position itself in the Greater Bay Area, and take the opportunity to examine and adjust the development and orientation of the University, keeping its strings attached to the motherland but opening up to the world. The University will deepen its progress in all relevant areas, and promote a comprehensive cooperation plan in talent and professional exchange, and scientific research. It will fully cooperate with the Macao S.A.R. government to integrate together into the Greater Bay Area, and strive to achieve the vision of the University.

Minister Wang first expressed his appreciation to the University motto of “Dedication to practical studies, Enhancement of knowledge, Ability and Quality” for how it embodies the qualities and virtues of human development and knowledge. He indicated that in the course of 19 years, M.U.S.T. has achieved leap-forward progress and growth. By focusing on cultivating talents, in many aspects, contributes significantly to the cultural heritage of the University and to the comprehensive development of students.

Minister Wang stated that the SKL of Lunar and Planetary Science and the SKL of Quality Research of Chinese Medicines of M.U.S.T. are remarkable technological innovation platforms. He hopes that M.U.S.T. invests in developing these two platforms, using the national platform to attract more outstanding experts and scholars and gaining fruitful achievements in aerospace and Chinese medicine research. Minister Wang also suggested that it is necessary to strengthen innovation and technology cooperation at home and abroad.
Minister Wang continued to state that the science and technology innovation plan for the Greater Bay Area will be released soon, and the global research and innovation highland will be constructed in the area. It is hoped that M.U.S.T. will grasp the abovementioned development opportunities and think about how to closely integrate the educational philosophy and approach of running an institution with the existing good scientific research platform and the national development strategy, to play a greater role of “internationalization” in the frontier of science and technology.
A total of 24 guests attended the meeting, including those who came from the Ministry of Science and Technology, China Science and Technology Exchange Center, The Administrative Center for China’s Agenda 21, Department of Science and Technology of Guangdong Province, Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao S.A.R., and Macao Science and Technology Development Fund.
