M.U.S.T. joins the Smart Society Industry-University-Research Alliance
Tong Ka Lok: Constructing and sharing intellectual innovation

The International Forum on Big Data Applications for Smart Society and Intellectual Innovation was held in Zhuhai on 10th July. Vice President Tong Ka Lok and Dean Zhang Du of the Faculty of Information Technology and Macau Institute of Smart City, Macau University of Science and Technology (M.U.S.T.), were invited to the forum and delivered an opening speech and keynote speech respectively. At the forum, the Industry-University-Research Alliance of Big Data Applications for Smart Society and Intellectual Innovation was established to promote digital, intelligent and high-quality sustainable city development.

The forum gathered the prestigious institutions domestic and at abroad including the Development Research Center of the State Council, China Development Bank, Chinese Academy of International Trade and Economic Cooperation, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of Oxford, Macau University of Science and Technology, Beijing Normal University, University of Hong Kong, Tongji University, and well-known domestic experts, scholars and industry leaders from China Mobile, Huawei, and Digital China Group, to conduct insightful discussion on the key technology status and frontier trends of smart society, urban construction, and big data applications for intellectual innovation.

Professor Guan Chenghua, Dean of the School of Economics and Resource Management of Beijing Normal University, hosted the opening ceremony of the forum. Vice President Wang Shoujun of Beijing Normal University, Vice President Tong Ka Lok of Macau University of Science and Technology, and Vice Chairman Chen Renfu of Zhuhai Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference attended the forum and delivered speeches.

Vice President Tong Ka Lok expresses that M.U.S.T. attaches great importance to the collection, innovation and application of data, and provides practical solutions for sustainable, green and high-quality city development. The Macau Institute of Smart City and the Macau International Research Institute of the Future Internet from M.U.S.T. have been committing to the research on and construction of smart city and smart campus. Since 2017, M.U.S.T. has worked on the building of smart campus as well as university data warehousing. The University is also actively involved in the development and construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. In this May, M.U.S.T. and the Zhuhai Municipal People’s Government signed a framework cooperation agreement. The two sides explores and deepens the cooperation on the fields including innovating education, cutting-edge science and technology, quality medical and medical research, medicine and health industry, the next generation Internet, space big data, artificial intelligence, aerospace, excellent cultural heritage, youth innovation and entrepreneurship creation.

Vice President Tong Ka Lok expects that the in-depth discussion with the industry experts on the rise of big data, artificial intelligence and intelligent society at the conference will push forward a historical change. He said: “The Development Plan for Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area states the practices of constructing of an open collaborative and innovative community in the region, promoting of a new generation of information infrastructure, and building a smart city group. It is foreseeable that the Greater Bay Area and the whole China are providing unprecedented opportunities for the construction and development of smart society and smart city. As such, we do hope that we will align and commit together to the construction and sharing of innovative fields in smart city, providing practical suggestions and wisdom for the research fields such as big data applications for national smart society and intellectual innovation.”

At the forum, Chinese and foreign experts have fully communicated and exchanged on issues such as big data application and smart city construction, with a hope to promote the development of smart city. Gao Jian, economist, research fellow and former Vice Chairman of the China Development Bank, Li Jianwei, Director of the Development Research Center of the State Council, Zhang Du, Professor of the Macau Institute of Smart City M.U.S.T., and Pentland, Professor of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology presented inspiring keynote speeches on smart city and big data.

Based on the consensus of the attended experts, scholars, government and leading enterprises, the forum advocated the establishment of the Industry-University-Research Alliance of Big Data Applications for Smart Society and Intellectual Innovation to actively promote the transformation, smart governance and dynamic decision-making for modern society and future city, and an integration of innovative and collaborative development in the region.
