President of Macau University of Science and Technology and Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering Chair Professor Liu Liang led a delegation on a visit to Dr. Alexis Tam Chon Weng, Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture of the Macao Special Administrative Region Government in the morning of December 2, 2019. The two parties engaged in close talks with regard to higher education development.

President Liu Liang started by thanking the Macao S.A.R. Government and Secretary Tam for their support to Macau University of Science and Technology. With their support, the University has been growing steadfast, providing the president himself a platform to develop his own career. He said that he was grateful for the opportunities he was blessed to serve Macao, make contributions to higher education, and promote research of Chinese medicine, and that he was even more grateful that it was in this platform that he was granted the honor of Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering in 2019. As a result, he expressed sincere gratitude to the Macao S.A.R. Government, to Secretary Tam Chon Weng and to Macau University of Science and Technology.

Secretary Tam Chon Weng gave warm congratulations to President Liu Liang on his being elected Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and thus becoming Macao’s first academician. He pointed out that the honor is not only of the President’s own, but also of M.U.S.T. and Macao. Under the leadership of President Liu Liang, M.U.S.T. has been growing fast. In the past five years, the University has been performing extraordinarily and has made major breakthroughs in Chinese medicine, planetary science, and medicine. The secretary gave high praises to M.U.S.T. for its endeavors in cultivating patriotism for Macao and for the motherland, pointing out that M.U.S.T. took the lead to hold flag-raising ceremonies among all universities in Macao, following which, the Macao S.A.R. reinforced its efforts to promote raising of national flags and soon the raising ceremony of national flags extended to all Macao schools. Secretary Tam also noted that the Macao S.A.R. Government has made a lot of efforts to promote education in the past five years, and he hoped that with the support of the Macao S.A.R. Government and the social communities, M.U.S.T. would double its efforts to generate more outstanding talents for the society.

President Liu Liang was particularly grateful that since its return to the motherland, in the context of the “One Country, Two Systems” principle, Macao has made tremendous development in education, science and technology and people’s livelihood. The president thought that one of the biggest achievements Macao has made was its advancement in basic education and higher education thanks to the Macao S.A.R. Government’s determination to “Prosper Macao through education”. He recalled that in the early days when M.U.S.T. was just founded, it had limited resources; today as the University has achieved fast development, it will never forget its roots, its history, and its mission. The University has made major efforts to bring in talents and open new programs. The president said, “It is by virtue of the support by the Macao S.A.R. Government that Macau University of Science and Technology gets to be what it is today.”

Secretary Tam expressed hopes that President Liu Liang would continue to lead Macau University of Science and Technology to assist the Macao S.A.R. Government and the new chief executive and his leadership team, carry on the patriotic education, develop and innovate science and technology, give support to Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and the “Belt & Road” initiative, and contribute to the making of a better tomorrow for Macao.

Vice President Kwong Ying Wa of Macau University of Science and Technology, and Senior Supervisor Li Wen of the Secretariat of M.U.S.T. joined the president in the visit.
