The Certificate Presentation Ceremony for Newly Elected Academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering 2019 was held in Beijing in the afternoon of December 3, 2019. At the ceremony, President Li Xiaohong of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) conferred “Chinese Academy of Engineering Academician Certificate” to the 75 newly appointed CAE academicians. President Liu Liang gave a speech at the ceremony as the representative of the newly appointed academicians. President Liu said that the magnificent “One Country, Two Systems” principle has projected forceful vitality in Macao. Since returning to the motherland, the Macao society has been growing steadfast in harmony, its economy has been thriving in prosperity, and people’s livelihood has been improving continuously. What’s more, Macao has fostered a large number of high-quality patriotic talents, thus has become a fertile land for innovative development of science and technology. He deeply believed that Macao would certainly play a greater role in the implementation of the national “Belt & Road” initiative and the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, and that Macao’s development in education and science and technology would provide a reliable safeguard for the long-time stability and prosperity of Macao and for the continuing implementation of the “One Country, Two Systems” principle.

While giving the speech, President Liu Liang expressed his gratitude and appreciation. He felt grateful to live in the grand era in the wake of the national opening up and reform, which has given him the opportunity to become an educator practicing teaching and a scholar conducting scientific research. He was also grateful for the tremendous support of the Central People’s Government and the Macao S.A.R. Government to the development of innovative science and technology in Macao, which has provided unwithering momentum for Macao’s sustainable development and integration into the greater picture of national development. Furthermore, he felt grateful that Macau University of Science and Technology gave him the opportunity to serve for Macao’s higher education and contribute to research of Chinese medicine, where he had the assistance of the most industrious research team. Finally, he was thankful for the understanding, sacrifice, love and encouragement of his family.

Finally, in the light of this year marking the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China and the 20th anniversary of Macao’s return to the motherland, President Liu Liang expressed his best wishes to the motherland and to Macao. Ladies and gentlemen,
Good afternoon. As a newly elected academician of the Medicine and Health Division of the Chinese Academy of Engineering in 2019, I feel greatly honored and tremendously encouraged to receive the highest honor in engineering science and technology and to have this opportunity to share my feelings and gratitude with you.
At this minute, I’m deeply humbled and immensely grateful. I’m grateful that I get to live in a time in the wake of the national opening up and reform, which gives me the opportunity to become an educator practicing teaching and scholar conducting scientific research; I’m grateful for the support bestowed on development of innovative science and technology in Macao by the Central People’s Government and the Macao S.A.R. Government, which has provided formidable impetuses for Macao’s sustainable development and integration into the bigger picture of national development; I’m grateful for the recognitions of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and the academicians to my work in furthering Chinese medicine, providing me the opportunity to feed back to the society and contribute to the nation at a higher platform; I owe immense gratitude to my parents who sent me to school despite difficulties when they could barely make a living; I owe immense gratitude also to my teachers who led me to the heaven of knowledge and to my alma mater which helped me to find my calling, my lifetime career goal; I’m grateful to Macau University of Science and Technology for giving me the opportunity to serve for development of higher education and Chinese medicine research in Macao; I’m thankful to my research team for their teamwork spirit and industriousness; above all, I’m grateful to my family; it is their understandings and sacrifices that enable me to concentrate on and devote wholeheartedly to my work; it is their love and encouragement that inject in me the courage and confidence to overcome all difficulties.
What’s more, I’d also like to take the opportunity of this certificate presentation ceremony to extend sincere congratulations to my fellow newly elected academicians. Especially, I would like to give my highest regards to the academicians, experts and scholars who have made remarkable contributions to the advancement of the national science and technology cause and to the welfare of the Chinese nation and even the entire mankind!
Distinguished leaders, academicians, and guests, twenty years ago, with the heart touching tunes of the “Song of the Seven Sons”, Macao returned to the arms of its motherland. From then on, the magnificent notion of “One Country, Two Systems” has projected forceful vitality and has brought to Macao unprecedented development opportunities. Since returning to the motherland, the Macao society was blessed with harmony and stability, its economy has been thriving with prosperity, and the people’s livelihood has improved continuously. In particular, in the field of higher education and science and technology innovation, Macao has generated a large number of patriotic young talents, constructed four state key laboratories in Chinese medicine research, lunar and planetary sciences and other fields, attracted and assembled many outstanding scholars from home and abroad, produced high-standard research outcomes continuously, and had its overall cultural impact and international competitiveness improved significantly. Today’s Macao has become a fertile land for cultivation of patriotic high-quality talents and development of innovative sciences and technologies. I deeply believe that Macao in the future will most certainly play a greater role in the implementation of the “Belt & Road” initiative and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, and that Macao’s development in education and science and technology would most certainly provide more reliable safeguard for the longtime stability and prosperity of Macao and for the continuing implementation of the “One Country, Two Systems”.
Science and technology embodies the collection of human wisdoms, which constitutes the essential impetuses for economic prosperity, societal development and civilizational advancement. In the 21st century when science and technology develops at such a fast rate, it is inevitably casting an increasingly significant impact on the world dynamics. The new development strategy of constructing an innovative country, which was identified in the new era, provides both opportunities and challenges for the development of various fields, including Chinese medicine. As an important part of the growth of a healthy China and national development of innovative sciences and technologies, Chinese medicine has been valued highly and supported greatly by the nation; this has greatly strengthened my sense of responsibilities and sense of commitment as a practitioner of Chinese medicine. As of today, what needs to be done urgently in Chinese medicine is to construct a new system of Chinese medicine science and technology, which is mainly based on Chinese medicine but in the meantime integrates and applies advanced multi-disciplinary technologies and techniques including modern medicines, and to reinforce independent innovation and origination innovation in Chinese medicine research, accomplish breakthroughs in multiple respects including Chinese medicine theories, clinical studies and applications, so as to enable Chinese medicine, which embodies the thousands of years of wisdoms, civilization and cultures of the Chinese nation, to reach the world and serve all human beings!
This year marks the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China and the 20th anniversary of Macao’s return to the motherland, at this moment when we usher in a new era, I’m looking forward to seeing more in-depth collaboration and integrative development between Macao and the mainland so that we can contribute joint wisdoms and forces to the national construction of an innovative country. I hereby sincerely wish continuous prosperity for our great mother nation, and an even more splendid tomorrow for the “Lotus” Macao!
