Naming Contest for Macao’s First Scientific Satellite Project Held Its Award Ceremony

Jointly organized by the Macao S.A.R. Government, the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao S.A.R. and the China National Space Administration, co-organized by the State Key Laboratory of Lunar and Planetary Sciences of the Macau University of Science and Technology (M.U.S.T.) and supported by the Macau Foundation and China Space Foundation, the ‘Naming Contest for Macao’s First Scientific Satellite Project’ was successfully concluded in December 2019. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the award ceremony was postponed to June 22, 2020, and held at Block A in M.U.S.T in front of a model of the satellite — Macao Science 1.

The Naming Contest campaign was launched on October 9, 2019, with the participation of all sectors in Macao. More than 1,100 people participated in this contest and over 1,500 names were received. The results were announced on December 15, 2019, and Macao's first scientific experimental satellite was officially named ‘Macao Science 1’. Macao citizen Mr. Hou Fei, the first one to submit this naming proposal, won the 1st prize.

At the award ceremony, Ms. Chen Jimin, Deputy Secretary General of the China Space Foundation, and Prof. Zhang Keke, Director of the State Key Laboratory of Lunar and Planetary Science at M.U.S.T. presented awards to the winners of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes.

Macao's first scientific satellite is scheduled for launch in 2021, which will be the world's first and so far the only scientific exploration satellite using the near-equatorial orbit to monitor the geomagnetic field and space environment of the South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA) near the equator. Designed to observe the fine characteristics of magnetic field changes in the anomalous region of the Earth's magnetic field over the South Atlantic Ocean, to provide predictions of short and medium-term changes in the geomagnetic field, and to obtain information on the broadband spectral energy distribution of high-energy electrons in the radiation belt, the satellite is to play a vital role in the research of related issues in Earth Science.
