Establishing the World-Class Analytical Technical Platform for Chinese Medicines Research with Bruker

The plaque unveiling ceremony of “Joint Laboratory of State Key Laboratory of Quality Research in Chinese Medicine (Macau University of Science and Technology) and Bruker for Mass Spectrometry and Hyphenated Technologies” was held on November 6, 2012 in Macau University of Science and Technology. The joint laboratory has been equipped with a series of the most high-end analytical apparatuses including LC-SPE-NMR, by which the world-class analytical technical platform for quality research of Chinese medicines is established. Prof. Xu Ao Ao, Rector of Macau University of Science and Technology, Chair Prof. Liu Liang, Vice Rector of Macau University of Science and Technology and Director of State Key Laboratory of Quality Research in Chinese Medicine (MUST), Mr. Clive Seymour, Executive Vice President of Bruker Daltonics and Dr. Jia Wei, Chief Representative of Bruker BioSpin of China attended the ceremony.

Upon approval by the Ministry of Science and Technology of China, the State Key Laboratory of Quality Research in Chinese Medicine has been formally established and operating in Macau since January 25, 2011. This is so far the only State Key Laboratory in the area of Chinese medicine research in China. The objectives of the State Key Laboratory at Macau University of Science and Technology are to establish an institution at advanced international level in Chinese medicine quality research and innovative drug research, bringing together and nurturing of fine talents in the area of science and technology for Chinese medicine research, and to launch high-level Chinese medicine research collaboration internationally. The laboratory in particular emphasizes on integrating multidisciplinary cutting-edge technologies to establish high-tech platforms for Chinese medicine quality and innovative drug research. So far a series of promising research results have been achieved.

Bruker is the world's largest manufacturer of nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer, also produces a variety of high-end mass spectrometers. Especially in the techniques of hyphenation of mass spectrometry with chromatography and nuclear magnetic resonance, Bruker is most reputable in the world, and for that it has a strong technical advantage. These world's leading equipment and analytical technologies play an important role in Chinese medicine quality safety control, identification of metabolites, structural analysis of chemical components, proteomic and metabolomic studies. The State Key Laboratory will fully utilize Bruker’s AVANCE 600 IIITM superconducting FT-NMR, maxis Impact LC-MS and autoflex speed MALDI-TOF/TOF spectrometers to carry out cutting-age research in Chinese medicines and innovative drug discovery, to promote modernization and internationalization of Chinese medicine, and to achieve innovative research results at an international excellent level. The Macau University of Science and Technology will work together with Bruker to built this joint laboratory into a center of mass spectrometry hyphenated technologies and structural identification of natural organic compounds in the region of Hong Kong, Macau and South China, to provide professional testing services for research institutions, industries and various part of the community. Meanwhile, the State Key Laboratory and Bruker will join hands closely to establish collaborative spectral database of natural products from Chinese herbal medicines.

“I believe the establishment of this joint laboratory will will greatly facilitate cutting-age research of Chinese medicine in Macau”, Chair Professor Liu stated, “ we hope that this joint laboratory will build into a showcase for Bruker’s NMR spectrometer and mass spectrometer in the field of Chinese medicine research. At the same time, we could provide more and better technical services to the community of Macau and South of China through closely cooperation between the University and Bruker ”.

Mr. Clive Seymour commented “We are delighted to have an opportunity to work closely with the State Key Laboratory within the broad context of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Development of detailed structural libraries combined with mass spectrometry based identification offers a promise of a far greater understanding of the efficacy of a range of compounds associated with the TCM field.”
