Mr. Chui Sai On, Chief Executive of Macao SAR and other government officials witnessed the agreement signing ceremony
On the morning of November 30th, 2012, Zhongshan government and Macau University of Science and Technology held a ceremony at Zhongshan Hot Spring Resort to sign the Cooperation Framework Agreement to run a new university. Mr. Chui Sai On, Chief Executive of the Government of the Macao SAR; Mr. Bai Zhi Jian, Director of Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao SAR; Vice governor of Guangdong Province Lin ShaoChun; Mr. Liao jingshan, Director of the Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office of the People's Government of Guangdong Province; Mr. Xue Xiao Feng, Party Secretary of the Zhongshan Municipal CPC, Mr. Chen Liang Xian, Mayor of Zhongshan Municipal People’s Government and Mr. Wei Zhong Lin, Deputy Director General of Department of Education of Guangdong Province attended the ceremony.
In the ceremony, Mr. Xue Xiao Feng, Party Secretary of the Zhongshan Municipal CPC; Prof. Xu Aoao delivered congratulatory speeches. On behalf of the two parties, Dr. Liu Chak Wan, Chairman of Macau University of Science and Technology Foundation and Mr. Chen Liang Xian, Mayor of Zhongshan Municipal People’s Government signed the agreement.
It is understood that the two parties aim to cooperate to launch an advanced, international, and innovative university that will eventually formulate a cooperative platform bringing together government, industry, university and research. The University will be a comprehensive university based on a full-time undergraduate division at first and will subsequently establish a graduate division in the fullness of time. Meanwhile, the University will also open a multi-level, diverse adult-education program to address the needs of local development. The soon-to-be-opened University is located in Banfu Town, Zhongshan City; it will be only forty minutes travel time between the new university and the main campus of MUST once the Taiyuan-Macao Expressway comes into operation.
This cooperation in running the University is an important achievement for Zhongshan and Macao in implementing and taking forward the Guangdong-Macao Co-operation Framework Agreement. It is also marks progress in promoting the “Guangdong-Macao Service Trade Liberalization” campaign and building the platform for Government-Industry-University-Research Cooperation. It is certain to contribute fully to the deepening of Zhongshan-Macao cooperation and the further internationalization and modernization of Zhongshan’s education. Macau University of Science and Technology will build the new university into an international research incubation base, taking advantage of the international research resources of the University and the cross-strait four regions to promote the strategic transformation and updating of Zhongshan industries and to formulate an international and innovative platform to produce talent for the modern new high-tech and modern service industries. At the same time, the University will also devote its efforts to enhancing further Macau’s strengths in science and technology, education, and culture, contributing to, and nurturing, talent for the development of Macao’s service industry.
