MUST held press conference on tremendous achievements in Chinese medicine research

  Macau University of Science and Technology held press conference for the National Science & Technology Progress Award in the Research of Traditional Chinese Medicine on January 22nd at 11:30am. In the press conference, the University proudly making an announcement that the research team led by Chair Professor Liu Liang, President of Macau University of Science and Technology and Director of the State Key Laboratory of Quality Research in Chinese Medicine (MUST) has long been engaged in the study of anti-arthritis with Chinese medicines, one of their projects “Innovation of Quality Control and Bioactivity Assessment for R&D of Anti-arthritic Product from Chinese Medicine ” received the 2012 National Science and Technology Progress Award (Second Prize).The National Science and Technology Awards Conference was held in the Great Hall of the People by the State Council on 18th January, awards were presented to recipient representatives by State leaders Hu Jin-Tao, Xi Jin-Ping, Wen Jia-Bao, Li Ke-Qiang, Liu Yuen-Shan, Hui Liang-Yu, Ma Kai, Liu Yan-Dong and et al. The main participants of the awarded project Chair Professor Liu Liang, Associate Professor Zhou Hua and Professor Jiang Zhi-Hong attended the Conference. Chair Professor Liu Liang and 65 other awarded recipients went onto the podium to accept the awards from the State leaders. President of the Administrative Committee of the Science & Technology Development Fund, Macao S.A.R. Government, Mr. Tong Chi-Kin and Committee member Mr. Cheang Kun Wai were invited to attend The National Science and Technology Awards Conference. This is the first time in Hong Kong and Macao region to receive a National Science and Technology Award in the research field of Chinese medicine. This indicates that the State Key Laboratory of Quality Research in Chinese Medicine (MUST) has entered the nation’s leading rank in Chinese medicine research.

  This project had produced many fruitful results, it led to the development of 3 Zheng Qing Feng Tong Ning products in anti-arthritis series, 5 national standards for quality control of new drugs, 2 new certificates, 5 drug production licenses, 4 granted patents in China, 2 granted patents in U.S.A, 41 research papers published including 27 in the international SCI English journals. And till 9th November, 2011, these 27 international SCI journal papers has been cited more than 400 times, covering more than 60 English and nearly 20 Chinese journals, and 3 academic monographs and textbooks. It can clearly be seen that the results of this research project not only possess great academic value, but also created good social and economic benefits in promoting scientific and technological progress in Chinese medicine industry, and furthering the internationalization of traditional Chinese medicine research.

  After the conference at noon on 18th January, the State Councilor Ms Liu Yan-Dong joined the 14 award recipient representatives at the National Science and Technology Awards Conference in the discussion forum during a buffet lunch. President Liu Liang was the only representative from Hong Kong and Macao region to attend this forum. State Councilor Liu Yan-Dong mentioned that the high specifications of this year’s National Science and Technology Awards Conference reflects the core position the country had position in the national development of science and technology, and to implement the innovation-driven development strategy. The State Councilor Ms Liu Yan-Dong listened carefully to the comments and suggestions made by the 14 delegates who took turns on the floor. President Liu Liang proposed in the forum that Macao needs to put extra efforts  on developing education, science and technology due to Macau geographical restriction in size, it is because of that it is unsuitable to develop manufacturing industries while the development of education, science and technology does not require a lot of places. As long as there is a good policy and resource protection in place, we would be able to attract world-class scientists and technicians to settle in Macao, and create world-class research results, to provide inexhaustible intellectual resources and technical supports for the appropriate level of diversity to promote Macao's economic development, and optimization and social sustainable development and progress of the community while expanding domestic and international cooperation, to enlarge the impact and role of Macau in China and abroad. He also hoped that the nation will strongly support the development of education, science and technology in Macao, to establish more platforms at a national level. President Liu Liang also said, traditional Chinese medicine development in particular needs to be "innovation-driven”, since Chinese medicine is a complex science, only by integrating multidisciplinary cutting-edge technologies and methods will then be able to clarify its scientific connotation, and to establish research techniques, methods, standards, and "innovation chain" for products to develop innovative theories, the development of State Key Laboratory of Quality Research in Chinese Medicine (MUST) are moving rapidly in this direction. President Liu Liang finally emphasized that special attention to the cooperation concept between “manufacturers, universities and research institutions” are needed for “innovation-driven” development. This award achievement by the MUST research team is exactly the result of long-term close connection concept between “manufacturers, universities and research institutions”.
