n celebration of the 14th anniversary of Macau University of Science and Technology, the university held a ceremony for conferment of honorary doctorate degrees at 10:00 am in D Hall of the university on March 24th. The Chief Executive of Macau SAR, Mr. Chui Sai On officiated the ceremony. The university conferred honorary doctorate degrees to five remarkable individuals; they are Dr. Yang Li Wei, Dr. Zhang Bo Li, Dr. Qian Yi, Dr. Chui Sai Cheong, and Dr. Ye Yi Xin. As China’s first “astronaut”, Doctor Yang Li Wei has tackled obstacles with valor and tenacity, dedicated himself to his country, and significantly prompted the advent of China’s spaceflight science and technology and national defense; Doctor Zhang Bo Li and Doctor Qian Yi are both renowned scholars in the science and technology community of our country and have both made significant contributions to the emergence of our country’s education and science and technology; Doctor Chui Sai Cheong and Doctor Ye Yi Xin have long been committed to serving society and serving Macau, devoted a great amount of effort and energy to Macau’s prosperity and stability and China’s sustainable development, and made immense contributions.
The guests presences the ceremony included Mr. Chen Si Xi, Deputy Director of the Central People’s Government in Macao SAR., Mr. Hu Zheng Yue, Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China, Mr. Tam Chon Weng, Chief of the Office of Chief Executive of Macao SAR., Mr. Tong Chi Kin, President of the Administrative Committee of the Science & Technology Development Fund of Macao SAR, Ms. Silvia Ho, Acting Director of Tertiary Education Services Office of Macao SAR, members of the MUST Foundation, board members of the University Council and the advisory committee, and representatives from other governmental departments, scholarship sponsors, enterprises, higher education institutions and middle schools. The guests and MUST faculty and students co-witnessed this historical moment. The honorary doctorates’ names will be attached to MUST forever; their aspirations, noble characters, extraordinary achievements, and innovative spirits have set great examples for MUST teachers and students to look up to.
President, Chair Prof. Liu Liang remarked in his speech that honorary doctorate degree is the supreme degree that a university confers to individuals, showing recognitions of the outstanding contributions made to a country and to the world by remarkable individuals from different areas, such as philosophy, culture, education, science and technology, art and others. The five honorary doctors that were awarded honorary degrees today have all demonstrated extraordinary achievements in their own professional areas. They all have taken up the important roles bestowed by the society and become the backbones of this era; they are the pride of our country and our nation, and they are the role models of MUST faculty and students. The President has also envisioned the university’s future development orientation and noted that, faced with new opportunities and situated at this age of coexistence of diverse values and collision of diverse cultures, in addition to imparting knowledge and skills, the educators of MUST will increasingly address the cultivation of right values among its students, enhance the interactions between humanities and science and technology, respect and succeed the excellent local culture and enhance its global vision and international outreaches, dedicate to excellence in the quality of education and outstanding research, augment the university’s role of serving the community, and prompt the translation of knowledge and research outcomes into productivity.
Afterwards, the MUST students and the honorary doctorates engaged in a talk; five honorary doctorates were invited to share their perceptions of and wisdoms on university, profession and life. The talk projected warmth, harmony, and inspirations.
