Prof. Erwin Neher gives science talk at Pui Ching High School on its 130th anniversary

To cultivate students' scientific literacy and interest and strengthen their scientific thinking, Pui Ching High School invited Nobel Laureate Erwin Neher to give an academic lecture on the afternoon of May 22, 2019. The event was one of the academic activities for the 130th anniversary of Pui Ching. It was supported by the State Key Laboratory of Chinese Medicine Quality Research of the Macau University of Science and Technology, Dr. Erwin Neher's Biophysics and Chinese Medicine Research Laboratory, and the Macau Science and Technology Development Fund. The lecture attracted over 400 students and teachers from various secondary schools in Macau. The academic talk was entitled "Ion Channels: Their Discovery, Functions and Important Role in Medicine". Pui Ching High School organized the lecture. The Nobel Laureate came to Macao Secondary School's campus to get in touch with our students and cultivate their scientific literacy and interest. After the lecture, Prof. Erwin Neher visited the Chinese Culture Center and the Innovation and Science Education Center of Pui Ching. He listened to the students' presentations and learned about integrating Chinese culture and technology innovation at Pui Ching. Afterward, he talked to the students who had just won the third prize and the special prize in the International Science and Engineering Awards in the U.S. This was of great benefit for the students. Dr. Neher expressed his appreciation for the students' enthusiasm for innovation and technology and hoped that they would continue to work hard on their scientific research.
