M.U.S.T. Vice-President Paul Tam participated “2024 International (Guangzhou) Stem Cell and Precision Medicine Industrialization Conference”

On 20 May 2024, Chair Professor Paul Tam, Vice President of the Macau University and Technology, and Member of the Hong Kong Academy of Sciences was invited to attend in the "2024 International(Guangzhou) Stem Cell and Precision Medicine Industrialization Conference" held in Guangzhou. This conference convened leading experts and industry leaders worldwide in fields of stem cells and precision medicine to discuss and advance the latest research and applications in the area. The conference also featured several distinguished academicians and renowned scholars, including Professor Randy W. Schekman, Nobel Prize in Medicine laureate and member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences (NAS); Professor Kwok-Fai So, Member of Chinese Academy of Sciences; Professor Pei Gang, Member of Chinese Academy of Science; Professor Xu Tao, Member of Chinese Academy of Sciences. The conference attendees delivered keynote speeches, established the Greater Bay Area (GBA) Stem Cell and Precision Medicine Industry Ecosystem, and advancing the high-quality development of the stem cell and precision medicine industry, as well as fostered academic exchanges and cooperation between the industry and the investment community.

At the conference, Vice President Paul Tam delivered an academic report entitled " Regenerative Medicine in Pediatric Disease" and shared the latest developments at M.U.S.T. and Medical Sciences Division (MSD), as well as an overview of the newly established M.U.S.T. Precision Regenerative Medicine Research Centre (PRMRC) in order to gain a better understanding of M.U.S.T. as a platform that attracts talent in the biomedical field, particularly within Guangdong Province and GBA. Meanwhile, Prof. Tam engaged in an in-depth discussion with industry peers on standards for the industrialization of stem cell and the development of the Guangdong-Macao in-depth cooperation zone in Hengqin.

Vice-President Paul Tam delivered a lecture

During the conference, Prof. Tam witnessed a historic moment on the launch of the Stem Cell-derived Exosomes project for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). The commencement of this project marks a new phase in stem cell therapy research and represents a significant milestone for ALS patients.

Precision Regenerative Medicine Research Centre (PRMRC) at MSD, M.U.S.T. was established in December 2023, aims to develop a range of cellular and tissue engineering approaches to enable the precise repair and reconstruction of damaged tissues and functions, centered on the use of stem cell and gene editing technologies. The research center aims to provide personalized precision regenerative medicine solutions for each patient, thereby creating new treatment options.
