M.U.S.T. Held "Tourism + City of Gastronomy Development Forum — Challenges and Opportunities in the New Era"

The "Tourism + City of Gastronomy Development Forum—Challenges and Opportunities in the New Era" was held on April 30, 2021 at M.U.S.T. This event was organized by the University, the Association of Macau Small and Medium Enterprises of Catering, and Macau Food & Beverage Industry Development Association. Guests from tourism, food service, hospitality and financial sectors were invited to discuss the challenges and opportunities faced by the Macao's food and beverage industry in the new era.

The forum was supported by the Macao Government Tourism Office, Macao Trade and Investment Promotion Institute, Macau Productivity and Technology Transfer Center, Macau Youth Greater Bay Area Development Association, and Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Economic and Trade Promotion Association.

Mr. Young Wing Sing, Vice Director of the Association of Macau Small and Medium Enterprises of Catering, Mr. Paul Iec, Director of the Travel Industry Council of Macau, Mr. Andy Wu, Director of the Macau Leisure Tourism Services Innovation Association, Mr. Paul Wong, Director of the Macau Youth Greater Bay Area Development Association, Mr. Harry Lai, Director of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Economic and Trade Promotion Association, Ms. Winnie Cheng, Director of the Macau Hotel Association, Ms. Wong Suk Yan, and many more industry representatives were invited, and around 100 teachers and students have attended the forum.

Director of the Macao Government Tourism Office, Ms. Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes, gave a warm welcome speech and said that gastronomy is an important highlight of Macao's tourism, and a key element of sustainable development in the future. The region earned the title of "City of Gastronomy " in 2017, affirming its food history and culture. The Macao government will continue to deepen the "tourism +", especially the integration crossover with gastronomy, and promote the recovery of the tourism industry.

Prof. Ben K. Goh welcomed Director Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes and the distinguished guests, and said that M.U.S.T. has been developing talents for the food and beverage industry and kept enriching the students' learning experiences through seminars, workshops, and forums such as this event. FHTM hopes that through these events students may have the opportunities to have close contact and dialogue with experts, to learn more about the industry, and broaden horizons. Meanwhile, industry representatives can debate on "tourism + gastronomy" through this forum, come up with new ideas, and create a better Macao with the joint efforts of the government, the food and beverage industry, academia, and the financial community.

The forum invited several well-known guests from the tourism and food and beverage industry, three elites were invited as guest speakers to give speeches. Mr. Cai Chunyan, Deputy General Manager of Bank of China Macau Branch, gave a speech on how the financial industry supports the economy, promotion, and operation of Macao's characteristic middle and small enterprise’ restaurants as the middle sector; Mr. Young Wing Sing, Director of the Macau Food & Beverage Industry Development Association spoke about how the food and beverage industry transformed and innovated under the influence of the COVID-19 crisis; Mr. Tan Haicheng, Executive Director of the Guangdong Restaurant Association shared that the integration of Guangdong-Macao has become a major trend, and about how the tourism of the two places can complement each other's needs and promote innovative development.

During the symposiums session, Deputy General Manager of Bank of China Macau Branch, Mr. Cai Chunyan, The Executive Director of Guangdong Restaurant Association, Mr. Tan Haicheng, The Director of Macau Leisure Tourism Services Innovation Association, Mr. Paul Wong, Associate professor of the Faculty of Hospitality and Tourism Management at Macau University of Science and Technology, Professor Wong Weng Chou, and Macau Culture Ambassador, Mr. Ken Vong were invited as panelists, and the Director of Macau Economic Association, Mr. Yu Wai Hang as host of the symposium. Guests shared their experiences in the tourism and food and beverage industry, analyzed how to innovate and promote the development of the industry from different perspectives in the new era, and launched a comprehensive and in-depth interactive discussion with the students. All students have benefited from the forum.
