MUST Studentshad a great success in 2015 National "Challenge Cup" From November 16th to 20th, the fourteenth National "Challenge Cup" Science and Technology Projects Competition held in Guangdong University of Industry. It was hosted by The Central Committee of the Communist Young League, China Science and Technology Association, Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China, All-China Students'Federation andthe People's Government of Guangdong province, and co-organized by the Guangdong University of Industry and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. After the final competition, six teams from Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST)won six prizes and achieved a great success. Three teams from Faculty of Chinese Medicine got the First, Second and Third Place Prize respectively.
Our faculty member, professor Liang Yong and assistant professor U Kin Tak led thirteen students to participate in this competition. Two groups of students won the Second Place Prizesand one group won the Third Place Prize.Professor Liang Yong and assistant professor U Kin Takreceived the "Excellent Teacher" awards.
The group formed by Liang-Yong Xia and Xu-Xin Lin, developed the project "Low-rank and sparsematrix decomposition based onS1/2 and L1/2 regularizations for separation of background and dynamic components for dynamic MRI"and won the Second Prize.The proposed algorithm adopts the augmented Lagrange multiplier technique and iteratively updates both the low-rank and sparse components in explicit form to produce a lower-rank background and a sparser foreground in MRI application.
Meanwhile, Shen Zhang Le, Fan Qiao and Yu Shan Wen constructed a "Smart Shoe" and won the Second Place Prize. This design lets the normal shoe become a practical "intelligent shoe". It can capture the data of the user's walking posture, steps, weight and BMI for expert analysis to understand the health of the user. Additionally, the phone anti-lost function and USB charging interface allow the smart shoe to be equipped with more user-friendly features.
In addition, Qing Zhi Jun, Liao Zhi Jian, Li Rui and Lv Cheng Xi, who are from Faculty of Information Technology, cooperated with Li Yu Fei, Li Shi Bo, Chen Yi Quan and Xian Wei Shen,who are from Faculty of Business, developed the project "Personalized Postcard Automatic Printer" and won the Third Place Prize. This project providesthe users with more convenient and interesting postcard-printing services, aims to help to build the image ofMacau Tourism and Leisure Center.
Through this competition, Qin Zhi Jun and Liao Zhi Jian found that the mainland government and universities gave much efforts to support students to make innovation and entrepreneurship, they can effectively gather resources and provide necessary conditions. What is more, university students from mainland demonstrate their strength in the theoretical research and have hadmany research results published in high level scientific journals. This is something that Macau-university students can learn from.
There were about 2,000,000 students from more than 2000 colleges and universities,directly participating in this competition.Totally, 1569 pieces of work from 528 colleges and universities are recommended by the provinces to participate in the national championship competition. Afterrigorous assessment, 318 pieces of work from 783 colleges and universities are chosen into the final round of competition. The 2015 "Challenge Cup" competition was held by two universities in Guangdong and Hong Kong. Meanwhile, the Hong Kong Regional Qualification Trials,the International Special Eventof "Smart City"and a series of innovation and entrepreneurship exchange activities are held firstly. It highlights the characteristics of Hong Kong and Guangdong and enhances the international participation. Innovation and entrepreneurship is the strongest voice of the era, the young students are the main force of them. This competition motivates the students' innovation and encouragesthemto actively join in the entrepreneurship and innovation.This also leads more enterprises to pay more attention on innovation and entrepreneurship of students,thus providing more support to them.
