Undergraduate Students from M.U.S.T. Won the Second Prize at the 2023 “Higher Education Press Cup” Contemporary Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling

Recently, the list of winners for the 2023 “Higher Education Press Cup” Contemporary Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling was announced. Undergraduate Students Li'an Zhu, Haocheng Yuan, Haojie Mou, Xingshuo Liu, and Yu Yang from the Macau University of Science and Technology (M.U.S.T.), with the guidance of Professor Zhanchuan Cai and Assistant Professor Ting Lan, won the Second Prize. The 2023 “Higher Education Press Cup” Contemporary Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling attracted nearly 180,000 students in 59,611 teams from a total of 1685 institutions or campuses from China, United States, Malaysia, and other countries. The School of Computer Science and Engineering, Faculty of Innovation Engineering of M.U.S.T., established a mathematical modeling guidance team, providing students with specialized training lectures and pre-competition guidance.

The Contemporary Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling is organized by the China Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. It aims to inspire students’ enthusiasm for learning mathematics and improve their comprehensive abilities to establish mathematical models and solve practical problems using computer technology. The competition requires a team with three undergraduate students to complete all the work, from model establishment, solution, verification, and paper writing for a problem within three days, which embodies the students’ abilities in studying problems, finding solutions, and teamwork spirit. Currently, the competition has become one of the largest-scale nationwide university contests in basic subjects and the world’s largest-scale mathematical contests. It is also one of the first nineteen competitions included in the “University Discipline Competition Rankings”.
