Session Four of the “Ambassadorial Lecture Series III” Ambassador Wu Chang Sheng: A Reinterpretation of Latin America and Columbia

Sponsored by Macao Foundation and hosted by Macau University of Science and Technology, Session Four of the “Ambassadorial Lecture Series III” was held in Room N101 in the afternoon of November 21st, 2014.

Former Chinese Ambassador to Columbia, Mr. Wu Chang Sheng was the speaker of this session. Ambassador Wu’s wife, former Chinese Ambassador to many countries and Expert of the Working Office of the Confucius Institute, Beijing Language and Culture University, Mr. Liu Zi Fa, and Standing Vice President of MUST. Prof. Zhang Shu Guang attended the lecture. Prof. Zhang Shu Guange presented the souvenir and the certificate of appreciation to the guest speaker.

Adopting the perspective of reinterpreting Latin America, from the views of point of environment, politics, and economy, Ambassador Wu Chang Sheng approached to some of the commonly held misunderstandings by Chinese to Latin America and introduced the fast-yet-stable political and economic development of Latin America over the past recent years. Meanwhile, Ambassador Wu Chang Sheng also shared with the MUST teachers and students the achievements made by President Xi Jin Ping’s visit to Latin America, particularly highlighting the new positioning, new platform, new situation, and new framework held by China to Latin America.

When talking about the “Portal Country” of South America - Columbia, the ambassador delivered a vivid explication of Columbia’s overall situation, what Columbians are most proud of - its “Four Treasures”, and Columbia’s two big social scourges: drugs and anti-government guerrillas. In the end, Ambassador Wu Chang Sheng gave a detailed account and analysis of the diplomatic relations between China and Columbia; he also encouraged the aspiring students to make contributions to the China-Columbia relations in the future.

Ambassador Wu Chang Sheng was the Deputy Director and later Director of the Department of Latin America of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (1986-1992), Counsellor of the Embassy of the People’s Republic Of China in the Republic Of Colombia (1992-1995), and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of China to Bolivia (1998-2000), Bahamas (2001-2003), and Columbia (2003-2007); currently, he is member of the China Foundation for International Studies, Director of Latin America Studies of the China Foundation for International Studies, and Senior Researcher.
