MUST Faculty of Law Hosting “Cross-strait Four-region Forum on Rule of Law (2015-Macau)”

The “Cross-strait Four-region Forum on the Rule of Law (2015-Macau)”, hosted by Faculty of Law, Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST), was held at the Grand Hall of Block N on March 19th, 2015. The invited guests included Judge Gao Xiaoli, Supreme People’s Court of China, Mr. Tang Te-Chung, the Honorable Justice of the Grand Justice of the Judicial Yuan, Taiwan, Mr. Li Hu, Deputy Secretary-General of China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission. Judges from the Court of Hengqin New Area and other judicial organs, scholars and experts from law faculties or schools of the four regions across the strait including University of Hong Kong, Chinese University of Hong Kong, City University of Hong Kong, Taipei University, National Chung Cheng University, and those from Mainland China, such as Sun Yat-sen University, Foreign Economic and Trade University, Harbin Institute of Technology, Liaoning University, as well as East China University of Political Science and Law, Southwest University of Political Science and Law, Northwest University of Political Science etc., gathered in Macao, one of the first places where the East met the West, and shared views on the rule of law across the region, so as to achieve mutual progress and in legal development among all the four regions.

Professor Shen Sibao, Dean of Faculty of Law, MUST, stated that it is essentially significant to discuss about the rule of law and proper governance at this time as massive developments are underway within the region while reforms or adjustments are required to meet the needs of social development. He also expressed his hope that such forum on the rule of law should be held every year amongst the four regions so that different innovations and further insights could be exchanged and theories and ideas could be better applied to practice.

MUST’s Vice President Professor Chen Xi delivered a welcome speech at the forum’s opening ceremony which was also one of MUST’s 15th-anniversary celebration events. According to Professor Chen, MUST has been striving to achieve the motto of “dedication to practical studies, and enhancement of knowledge, ability and quality” for the past 15 years since its establishment. It was with the support of all sectors of society and joint efforts of all faculties and students that MUST has become the youngest amongst the Top-100 Universities in the four regions across the strait. She also pointed out that deepening interdisciplinary and innovative research, as well as exploring further regional and international cooperation in education and research would continue to be the chief direction for the development of Faculty of Law.

Other participating guests in this forum were Mr. Wong Sio Chak, Secretary for Secretariat for Security of the Macao SAR, Mr. Mai Man Ieng, Deputy Prosecutor-General for Public Prosecution Office of the Macao SAR, Professor Mo Shijian, Dean of Faculty of Law, University of Macau, Professor Lok Wai Kin, Faculty of Law, University of Macau, Mr. Lei Wun Kong, lawyer in Macao, and other guests from various organizations such as Secretariat for Administration and Justice of Macao SAR, Macau Public Prosecution Office, courts in Macao, Legal Affairs Department, Macau Polytechnic Institute. Over two hundred students and teachers of MUST attended this forum.
