Chair Prof. Zhi-Hong Jiang and Prof. Pang Chuan Appointed as Vice President of MUST, Effective from March 1st

Upholding the educational philosophy of attaching equal importance to both teaching and research, aiming to continually advance excellent quality development of teaching and research, elevate the academic standards of the University, and bring the University’s development in better allignment with the needs of the society, Macau University of Science and Technoogy appointed Chair Professor Zhi-Hong Jiang and Professor Pang Chuan as Vice President of MUST, effective from March 1, 2016. The University believes that with the two new vice presidents’ international vision of research, extensive academic impact, and rich experience in teaching, research, and administrative management, they two would add new impetuses to the University in terms of excellent quality education and extraordinary research, and therefore bring the University’s educational standards to a higher level.

Chair Professor Zhi-Hong Jiang will be in charge of the University’s research management. Professor Jiang joined MUST in July 2011 as Director of the Macau Institute for Applied Research in Medicine and Health (MIAR), and Deputy Director of the State Key Laboratory of Quality Research in Chinese Medicine (MUST). In September 2013, he was appointed as Associate Vice President, and was promoted as Chair Professor in September 2015. He’s made remarkable contributions to the University’s educational and research development.

Professor Jiang graduated from China Pharmaceutical University, and obtained his PhD degree from Nagasaki University, Japan. After postdoctoral training at the Department of Biological Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology, Harvard Medical School, USA, he joined School of Chinese Medicine, Hong Kong Baptist University as assistant professor, and was promoted as associate professor and full professor. Professor Jiang is an internationally-renowned scientist in natural products chemistry. His research interests include natural products chemistry, metabolomics, quality control of Chinese medicinal herbs and bioorganic chemistry. In an effort to advance the modernization of Traditional Chinese medicines (TCM) research and development, Professor Jiang has devoted deeply to the characterization of the active ingredients of TCM, and elucidation of their action mechanism by using modern technologies of chromatography, spectroscopy, chemical biology and metabolomics, and has obtained outstanding achievements. Professor Jiang has published more than 190 papers in international SCI journals, which were cited 5038 times, with H-index of 42 (Google Scholar, 2016).

In acknowledgement of his substantial research achievements, Professor Jiang was awarded as the Young Distinguished Scholars by National Natural Science Foundation of China (Overseas) in 2007, and was appointed as Chair Professor of the Changjiang Scholars Programme by the Ministry of Education of China in 2014. His research was financially supported by the Macau Science and Technology Development Fund (FDCT), Hong Kong Research Grants Council, Department of Health of HKSAR, National Natural Science Foundation of China and National Institutes of Health (NIH) of U.S.A. He also serves in a number of important academic positions, including Associate Editor of the SCI journal Chinese Medicine, a member of International Advisory Board of ChemMedChem and Editorial Board Member of Scientific Reports (Nature Publishing Group). In addition, Professor Jiang also serves in multiple social service positions, including the Vice Presidents of the Speciality Committee on Immunology of TCM and the Speciality Committee of TCM Pharmaceutical Chemistry of the World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies (WFCMS), and the Vice Councilor of the Cross-Strait Scientific Collaboration Center for Chinese Medicine.

Professor Pang Chuan will be in charge of the University’s graduate education. Professor Pang Chuan officially joined MUST in August of 2003, and has been workingwith the University ever since, taking up such posts as Dean of School of Graduate Studies, Director of Institute for Social and Cultural Research, Associate Vice President, and others. While he was working with MUST, he also went to Harvard University and Eastern Michigan Universityfor further studies as a visiting scholar; he’s accumulated rich and profound experience in teaching, research, administration, and management, witnessed the growth of Macau University of Science and Technology, and made great contributions to the development of School of Business and postgraduate education.

Professor Pang Chuan received his Bachelor in Science, Master in Management and Ph.D. in Management at Shanghai Fudan University. He has rich experience in teaching and was the winner of the first Teaching Outstanding Awards of MUST. He also has rich research experience in information systems and e-commerce, and has published a great many papers in international journals such as “Computers in Human Behavior”, “International Journal of Transportation and Logistics”, “Knowledge-Based Systems”, “Computer Standards & Interfaces”, “Information”, “Human Systems Management”, and so on.

Professor Pang Chuan is member of several government committees, including the Consulting Council of Public Administration Reform, the Economy Development Committee, and the Judge Committee of Young Entrepreneurs Aid Scheme. He also holds positions in many local organizations, including President of Macau International Information Systems Association, President of Macau Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, President of Macau Management Engineering Association, President of Macau Youth Research Association, Director General of Nanjing Fellow Association of Macau, etc.
