Ministry of Education Gave High Recognitions to Development of MUST

Early in the morning of March 15, 2016, Dr. Liu Chak Wan, Member of the Standing Committee of Chinese People’s Political Consultative Committee and Chancellor of MUST led a delegation and paid a visit to the Ministry of Education, China; the delegates that went on the visit include President Liu Liang, Vice President Tong Ka Lok, Vice President Chen Xi, Vice President Pang Chuan, and Ms. Chen Ji Min, Member of the Administrative Committee of the MUST Foundation; Deputy Director-General Pu Hai Long and Director Hung Bo of the Culture and Education Department, Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macau S.A.R. accompanied the delegation on the visit; the delegation was warmly welcomed by Mr. Hao Ping, Vice Minister of Education, Mr. Zhang Dong Gang, Director-General of the Department of Social Sciences, Mr. Zhao Ling Shan, Standing Vice Director of the Office of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Affairs, Mr. Gao Run Sheng, Vice Inspector of the Department of Science and Technology, and Vice Director Wang Zhi Wei and Vice Director Yu Bin of the Office of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Affairs.

On behalf of Mr. Yuan Gui Ren, the Minister of Education, Vice Minister Hao Ping first extended warm welcome to the delegation led by Chancellor Liu, giving high regards to Chancellor Liu’s commitment to the development of Macau’s higher education and fostering of excellent talents. Chancellor Liu responded with sincere thanks to Vice Minister Hao Ping and other principals of the Ministry of Education for making time out of their busy schedules to meet with the delegation, and assigned President Liu Liang to give a presentation on the University’s work and outcomes over the past years with respect to education, research, social services, research and teaching facilities, and particularly, the positioning and strategies of the University’s development as well as the new development and signature outcomes brought about by the University’s policies of attaching equal importance to both teaching and research and bringing in leading scholars and excellent faculty members from different academic fields. President Liu Liang also expressed wishes that MUST would like to participate in the establishment and development of the Key Research Base for Humanities and Social Sciences, Ministry of Education. Vice President Tong Ka Lok gave an introduction of the University’s new development in campus building and installment of research and teaching facilities. Chancellor Liu Chak Wan emphasized the significance and role of MUST in developing programs such as cinematic arts. Vice Minister Hao Ping, after hearing the presentations, noted that the development of MUST over the past years was indeed impressive, the University had a clear vision in its development positioning and educational philosophy, the relevant adjustment of disciplines and restructuring made was also reasonable, the research and educational standards have greatly improved, and the Ministry of Education would continue to provide full support for the University’s further development. Vice Minister Hao Ping also expressed hopes that MUST could participate in more national-level international academic exchanges, reinforce its cooperation with the Portuguese-speaking countries in regional studies, and further build its “Macau Forum” brand; he noted that he would like to give welcome to the University’s wish to participate in the establishment of the Key Research Base for Humanities and Social Sciences, Ministry of Education. Director-General Zhang Dong Gang indicated that the Ministry of Education would actively assess the possibility for mainland universities and MUST to engage in extensive and in-depth cooperation in the field of humanities and social sciences, and give full support to MUST in establishing partnership with the Key Research Base for Humanities and Social Sciences, Ministry of Education, hoping that the relevant collaboration could be an open-ended one that’s carried out by taking a problem-oriented approach, and assembling talents of multiple disciples that are from both within the University and outside of the University. He also encouraged MUST to make more active efforts in fostering and bringing in talents of humanities and social sciences so as to reinforce the University’s research capacity and development potentials in humanities and social sciences. Vice Inspector Gao Run Sheng noted that MUST had made tremendous progresses over the past years, and had achieved a leapfrogging development in certain areas, so he had great confidence in the University’s future development; he also hopes that MUST could respond closely to the urgent needs of the moderately diversified development of Macau’s economy, pick up its pace in diversified innovations, have clear vision in top-level design, particularly in reinforcing its integration with the higher institutions of the Guang Dong Province and the Pearl River Delta, and establishing a full-scale innovation mechanism for synergetic regional development. Standing Vice Director Zhao Ling Shan affirmed that the Office of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Affairs, Ministry of Education would continue to give full support to MUST in its exchange and cooperation with the mainland universities.

Before the meeting came to an end, Chancellor Liu Chak Wan and President Liu Liang once again extended sincere thanks to the support and attention given by Vice Minister Hao Ping and other principals of the Ministry of Education to MUST, and noted that with the support of the Ministry of Education and the Macau S.A.R. government, the University would continue to uphold its philosophy of attaching equal importance to teaching and research, seize tightly three key factors: “quality, innovation, effect”, and strive towards a higher platform.
