International Institute of Next Generation Internet establishes at M.U.S.T.

Macau University of Science and Technology and the China Future Internet Engineering Center (CFIEC) jointly launched the “International Institute of Next Generation Internet at Macau University of Science and Technology (hereafter, the Institute)”. The Institute aims at the world’s next-generation internets and to construct international platforms for academic scientific research, think-tanks, professional talents training, and industry development. Mr. Liu Dong, Director of CFIEC, was appointed as Director of the Institute.

Following its establishment, the International Institute of Next Generation Internet at Macau University of Science and Technology held its first symposium in Beijing, where experts and specialists engaged in inspiring discussions on several issues that enable the next-generation internets to propel diversified development of Macao society, and contribute ideas and thoughts on the future development of the Institute. Dr. Liu Chak Wan, National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and Chancellor of M.U.S.T., spoke at the symposium, noting that in view of the compelling national initiatives in advancing the scale and deployment of next-generation internets, it carries great significances for CFIEC and M.U.S.T. to seize the opportunities made available by the industrial IPv6 upgrade and joined forces to establish the International Institute of Next Generation Internet. Mr. Liu Dong, Director of CFIEC and the Institute made remarks that the Institute will focus on work related to Internet foundation resources, key technologies research, international internets management, and internet talents cultivation, which fully exert Macao’s strengths in terms of “One Country, Two Systems”, international trade free port, and international network, and facilitate Macao’s multi-dimensional development.”

Afterwards, the experts initiated enthusiastic discussions on topics such as the opportunities afforded by the IPv6 for sustainable development of Internet and industrial technological upgrade. Zhuang Zi Xin, Counsellor for Beijing Municipal Government Informatization, expressed that Macao’s strategic positioning in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Bay Area is to become a center for world tourism and leisure and for science and technology innovation; the International Institute of Next Generation Internet at Macau University of Science and Technology will take advantage of the “transformation of typical applications and innovation of characteristic applications” featured by the next-generation internets to contribute to the advancement of the Bay Area, and in the meantime to forge a successful case and solution that has bearings on the international market.

Experts that attended the symposium are from Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, Tsinghua University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, Peking University, China Cyberspace Institute, China Telecom Beijing Research Institute, and China Telecom (Macao). Director Liu Dong and Dr. Tong Ka Lok, Vice President of M.U.S.T. presented appointment letters to experts of the Institute.
