article05291606xRecently, Leiming Wu, a Ph.D. student of the Faculty of Information Technology, Macau University of Science and Technology, published a paper entitled “Kerr Non-Linearity in 2D Graphdiyne for Passive Photonic Diodes” (DOI: 10.1002/adma.201807981) on the top international academic journal Advanced Materials under the guidance of Prof. Han Zhang and Prof. Jianqing Li. The latest impact factor of the journal is 21.950. This achievement enabled important progress in the field of optical application research of two-dimensional graphdiyne materials, filling the gap in graphdiyne nonlinear optics research.

Graphdiyne is a new carbon allotrope comprising sp- and sp2-hybridized carbon atoms arranged in a 2D layered structure, which has a broadband Kerr nonlinear optical response in visible range. Compared to graphene, graphdiyne has outstanding advantages in carrier mobility and stability. Using the strong Kerr effect and high stability of 2D graphdiyne materials, Mr. Wu et al. skillfully applied it to photonic devices, and combined it with another two-dimensional material SnS2 to form a composite structure. The composite structure breaks the symmetry propagation characteristics of light in the medium and realizes the nonreciprocal light propagation in photonic diode. In addition to graphdiyne, Mr. Wu et al. found that several other two-dimensional materials (2D Te, MXene, perovskite, etc.) also have strong nonlinear response so that they have good application prospects in nonlinear photonic devices, such as optical switch, all-optical modulation, information converter, etc. These important studies have also been published in top academic journals: Advanced Functional Materials (IF=13.325), 2019, 29(4), 1806346; Laser & Photonics Reviews(IF=8.529), 2018, 12(12), 1800215; Advanced Optical Materials (IF = 7.430), 2018, 6 (19), 1800400. These studies were supported by the grants of the Macao Science and Technology Development Fund (Nos. 007/2017/A1 and 132/2017/A3).
