Professor Lin Huiqing, the Director of the Health Professions Committee of the Ministry of Education and the former deputy director of the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China, visited Macau University of Science and Technology (M.U.S.T.) on the morning of 10th September, 2019, and was warmly received by M.U.S.T. management board members including President Liu Liang and Vice President Lin Zhijun.

At the meeting, President Liu Liang addressed the development of M.U.S.T. in recent years and pointed out that the University has developed into the largest comprehensive university in Macao with more than 12,000 current students. The University owns a Faculty of Medicine and is the only university in Macao that delivers the courses in Chinese and Western medicine. M.U.S.T. commits itself to cultivating patriotic, auspicious and innovative talents, and furthers itself with concepts of ‘quality’ and ‘innovation’. Attentive to ‘Macao needs’, the University aims to establish a new highland of innovative technology with local characteristics to form local specialists. The University attaches to the motherland, positions itself in the Greater Bay Area, and opens to the world. It strives to educate and develop talents for the country and the Macao S.A.R. and the successors of the ‘One Country, Two Systems’, to facilitate the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, and to contribute to the country’s development and construction.

Vice President Lin Zhijun indicated that M.U.S.T. gives great importance to the teaching staff and the quality of the teaching, and is committed to provide the best education for students. As well as teaching, the faculty staff also takes up tutoring and mentoring roles to provide mental health consultation for the students. This combination of classroom learning and student life caring supports the educational purpose of whole-person development.

Dean Manson Fok delivers a speech

Dean Manson Fok of the Faculty of Medicine stated that the Bachelor of Medicine & Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) program course is designed and aligned with the same curriculum structure, and content, as the UK and other countries. This competency-oriented program consists of five years of formal course followed by one year of internship. The course begins with a foundation module and proceeds to various basic sciences and clinical clerkships. M.U.S.T. has signed MOUs with Peking University People’s Hospital, Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon and Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto, from Portugal, to cooperate and provide more academic and clinical exchanges in promoting medical advancement for Macao.

Professor Lin Huiqing expressed that Macau University of Science and Technology (M.U.S.T.) has been established for 19 years only but developed rapidly. Its first Bachelor of Medicine & Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) program in Macao marks that Macao is eligible to cultivate medical talents and contribute to the development of the national medical education system. M.U.S.T. positions itself appropriately, develops rapidly, and is distinctively featured. The University implements the valuable concepts of ‘quality’ and ‘innovation’ for its development, and accommodates advanced teaching equipment, philosophy and methods, and delivers excellent scientific research achievements. All these have enabled the University to develop as a leading role in the international setting, with evident all-round top-level advantages of comprehensive strength, academic level, innovation ability, and cultural influence. Professor Lin then wished M.U.S.T. a flourishing future.

Wang Weimin, Deputy Director of the Peking University Health Science Center and Executive Deputy Director of the National Center for Health Professions Education Development, stated that the establishment of the Faculty of Medicine embodies that M.U.S.T. is the largest comprehensive university in Macao. He hoped that Peking University Health Science Center and M.U.S.T. will conduct more cooperation to promote exchanges and communications in the medical field between the Mainland and Macao and facilitate the country’s development and construction.

After the meeting, President Liu Liang accompanied the guests to meet the students of Faculty of Medicine in the classroom, and visited the Center for Continuing Medical and Health Education (CCMHE), the Center of Excellence for Professional Medical Development and the State Key Laboratory of Quality Research in Chinese Medicine.
