M.U.S.T. Honorary Doctors Receive Highest National Honors

The Presentation Ceremony of National Medals and National Honorary Titles of the People’s Republic of China was held at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, on the 29th of September. General Secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee , President of the People’s Republic of China, and Chairman of the Central Military Commission, Xi Jinping conferred Medal of the Republic, Friendship Medal, and national honorary titles to awardees, and delivered an important speech. Among the awardees were three honorary doctors of Macau University of Science and Technology, Honorary Doctor of Engineering Academician Sun Jiadong and Honorary Doctor of Agriculture Academician Yuan Longping, who were awarded Medal of the Republic, and Honorary Doctor of Science Academician Ye Peijian, who was awarded the national honorary title of “the people’s scientist”.

The Award Presentation Ceremony aims to mark the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, award individuals and role models who have made significant contributions to the establishment and development of the New China, and carry forward remarkable national spirit and admirable qualities of the time. In accordance with a resolution arising from the 13th meeting of the 13th Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, altogether 8 individuals were awarded Medal of the Republic, 6 Medal of Friendship, and 28 national honorary titles.

The following is a brief introduction of Academician Sun Jiadong cited at the Ceremony: Sun Jiadong is founding hero of China’s “Two Bombs, One Satellite” project, Chief Designer of China’s first satellite, the Beidou Navigation Satellite System, and the Chinese Lunar Exploration Program. Having devoted himself to space science for over six decades, he has made significant contributions to space program development of China.

The following is a brief introduction of Academician Yuan Longping cited at the Ceremony: Yuan Long Ping is father of the hybrid rice research. For 50 years, he has devoted himself to research, applications and promotion of hybrid rice techniques, and has made significant contributions to food safety and agricultural science development in China and to food supply across the world.

The following is a brief introduction of Academician Ye Peijian cited at the Ceremony: Ye Peijian is people’s scientist, the Chief Commander and Chief Designer of the Chinese Lunar Exploration Program. He has devoted himself to space technologies research for 50 years, and has made significant contributions to lunar exploration programs and satellite innovation of China.

National medals and honorary titles are an important part of the awards system, and are one of the highest national honors. These awards not only represent the high recognition given to the awardees for their outstanding achievements and noble spirits, but also embody strong signals for the entire society to respect heroes and look up to role models.
