On the morning of November 22, 2019, the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) officially released the list of newly appointed academicians of the CAE in 2019. Among the list was Chair Prof. Liu Liang, President of Macau University of Science and Technology, who was elected an academician of the CAE, and by doing so, he became Macao’s first CAE academician.
The Chinese Academy of Engineering was founded in 1994. As a consultancy-based academic body, it represents the highest honor in the Chinese engineering technology community. It is an institution directly affiliated to the State Council of People’s Republic of China. Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering is the highest national academic title in engineering science and technology, and is a life-long honor.
Chair Prof. Liu Liang is a doctor in medicine; he is now President of Macau University of Science and Technology, and is concurrently Director of the State Key Laboratory of Quality Research in Chinese Medicine, Project Adviser of traditional medicine for the World Health Organization, Convener of the 1st Working Group for Chinese Herbal Medicine and Member of the Technical Committee of ISO/TC249, and Chairman of the Special Committee of Immunology of Traditional Chinese Medicine of the World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies, President of the Macau International Collaboration Alliance for Rheumatology Research, and Member of the Talents Development Committee and the Science and Technology Committee of the Macao S.A.R. Government. Chair Prof. Liu is a well-known physiologist in Chinese medicine; his main research interest lies in rheumatic diseases; he has published over 230 papers in SCI English journals with an accumulated impact factor of over 1060, including Science and Nature supplements, Nature Medicine, Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases, Nature Communications, Microbiome, Pharmacology and Therapeutics and other world’s famous journals. Chair Prof. Liu has been granted 27 international patents as the 1st inventor, two 2nd prizes of the National Science and Technology Advancement Award, two 1st prizes of the Natural Sciences Awards of the Ministry of Education, three 1st prizes of other provincial awards, Certificate of Merits in the 1st “National Innovation Pioneer Award”, National Mid-age and Young Expert with Exceptional Contributions, Honorary Fellow of the Canadian Chartered Institute of Business Administration, Person of the Year by Scientific Chinese, Honorary Academician of the Social Enterprise Research Academy of Hong Kong, and the 2018 Certificate of Honor by the Macao S.A.R. Government.
President Liu Liang’s being elected as an academician of the CAE has demonstrated the high recognitions of our country to his accomplishments in succeeding and innovating Traditional Chinese Medicine; it also represents a major breakthrough of Macau University of Science and Technology in its development of disciplines and programs and high-end professional teams. It has great significances in elevating the stance of the University and the Macao S.A.R. in science and technology innovation, and in leading and driving the development of medicine and health. By becoming the first local academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, President Liu Liang has broken another record. The news came when both Macao S.A.R. and Macau University of Science and Technology celebrate the 20th anniversary, and thus has added another glorious touch to the higher education community in Macao and its commitment to develop innovative science and technology. In view of the appointment by the CAE, President Liu Liang noted that he would like to thank the CAE for granting him the honor and that he would continue to devote efforts to national and Macao development in innovative science and technology and in higher education.
