M.U.S.T. Delegation Visits Peking University

Dr. Liu Chak Wan, Chancellor of Macau University of Science and Technology, and President Liu Liang, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, led the university management and scientific research specialists on a visit to Peking University on September 8. They were warmly received by Party Secretary Qiu Shuiping of Peking University, who is also Chairman of the Executive Committee of Pekin University, and President Hao Ping, respectively. The leaderships of the two universities engaged in in-depth exchanges with regard to collaborations between the two universities.

Chancellor Liu Chak Wan expressed thanks to Peking University for its great support to Macau University of Science and Technology. He gave an introduction of the backgrounds of founding M.U.S.T. and the university’s management structure and recalled the course of history of collaborations between the two universities. As the first non-profit private university established since the Macao S.A.R. was founded, M.U.S.T. loves China and Macao. It is grounded in Macao, has the motherland on its back, and is faced to the world. It has been making efforts to integrate into the development course of our mother nation, involve itself proactively in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area plan, and has become the largest-scale comprehensive university in Macao. The chancellor expressed hopes that M.U.S.T. could engage in all-round cooperation with Peking University as the leading head and Macao as a bridge, to jointly grow an ecology for technology-based collaborations in the future.

Party Secretary Qiu Shuiping introduced the basic situation of Peking University and its prominent trends over the past years. As China’s first national comprehensive university, Peking University offers a full range of programs in liberal arts, sciences, medicine and engineering. It has a complete system of programs and courses covering all fields and areas, and in recent years has placed special emphasis on balanced programs and courses and has reinforced plans of new engineering programs. The university has remarkable advantages in programs and is now at its fastest and best development stage in its history. Party Secretary Qiu noted that the two universities align highly with each other with respect to programs and frontier technologies, and that Peking University is delighted to seek all-round reinforcement of cooperation with Macau University of Science and Technology and to jointly serve for national strategic needs.

President Liu Liang gave a detailed introduction to the structure of programs and courses, cultivation of talents and state key laboratories of M.U.S.T., noting that with the great support of the Central People’s Government, the Ministry of Education and the Macao S.A.R. Government, the university has grown significantly educational strengths and academic ranking, with its scale of faculty teams enlarged, improved academic standards and research outcomes reaching new heights. The university now owns 2 state key laboratories and 4 partner research bases and joint laboratories with key institutes of Ministry of Education and has received a plethora of state-level and provincial/ministerial level awards and prizes. It was hoped that the two universities could bring together their respective strongest science and technology forces, innovate educational approaches and strengthen science and technology cooperation.

President Hao Ping extended welcome to the visiting M.U.S.T. delegation and gave praises for its achievements since its establishment. He said that Peking University and M.U.S.T. share a profound history in collaboration, and the two universities once collaborated to develop the Faculty of Law of M.U.S.T., which has led to a fruitful yield. Looking ahead, the two universities share a bright future in terms of cooperation, and it is hoped that both could take advantage of their powerful faculty teams and science and technology forces to make full use of the unique strengths of the Macao S.A.R., seek synergetic development in future technologies, astrophysics, Chinese medicine, library resources and other areas, help advance  programs and science and technological transfer in the two universities, and jointly contribute forces to help our nation achieve breakthroughs in key areas.

Other members attending the reception and visit include Mr. Gong Qihuang, Standing Vice President and Director of Academic Affairs of Peking University, Vice President Wang Bo, and departmental representatives from the Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Office, Education Foundation and Library of Peking University, and faculty representatives from College of Engineering, School of Earth and Space Sciences, Institute of Molecular Medicine, Kavli Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics, Peking University, and Vice President Tong Ka Lok of M.U.S.T., Vice President Jiang Zhihong, Vice President Pang Chuan, Vice President Kwong Ying Wa, University Council Member Chen Jimin, Director Zhang Keke of the State Key Laboratory of Lunar and Planetary Sciences and Prof. Zhang Kang of the Faculty of Medicine.
