FHTM Held a Cultural Talk: “Four Hundred Years of City Defense, Fortresses in Macao” by Mr. Lam Iek Chit

The Faculty of Hospitality and Tourism Management (FHTM) invited Mr. Lam Iek Chit to deliver a cultural talk “Four Hundred Years of City Defense, Fortresses in Macao” on April 7 & 8, 2021. Mr. Lam is an urban planner and member of the Macao Cultural Heritage Committee. The talk is part of “The Lectures on Cultural Topics” administered by the Macau Cultural Affairs Bureau and co-organized by the Artistry of Wind Box Community Development Association.

Mr. Lam Iek Chit Gave a Lecture

During the lecture, Mr. Lam shared about the construction of fortresses in the enclave for the past 400 years. Macao is located in a strategic location on the western bank of the Pearl River Delta and started as an important trading center for the Portuguese after they arrived in Macao in the 16th century. As Macao is virtually surrounded by sea, a number of fortresses were built by the Portuguese for protection against invaders. These sturdy stone structures have witnessed the development of the European military defense and some of them now serve as popular tourist attractions. After the talk, FHTM teachers and students expressed that they gained more knowledge on the historic and cultural aspects of Macao.
