Macau University of Science and Technology confers 2021 Honorary Doctorate Degree upon 8 Outstanding Individuals

Macau University of Science and Technology is proud to confer 2021 Honorary Doctorate degree upon 8 outstanding individuals in recognition of their outstanding achievements in their respective professions and valuable contributions to the well-being of society. In view of the pandemic restrictions, the conferment ceremony will be held during the M.U.S.T. 22th Anniversary in 2022.

 

Dr. Huang Luqi

Dr. Huang Luqi is Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, President of China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences, Standing Member of the 13th National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, Vice President of the 10th National Committee of China Association for Science and Technology and Chief Scientist of the National Chinese Medicine Industrial Technology System. As Chief Scientist of the National Chinese Medicine Industrial Technology System, Person-in-Charge of Key-Area Chinese Medicinal Material Resources Innovation Team of Ministry of Science and Technology, and Head of the Expert Group of the National Survey on Chinese Medicinal Material Resources Survey, he oversaw the organization and implementation of the 4th National Survey on Chinese Medicinal Material Resources, which brought the Chinese Medicine industry to contribute immensely to poverty alleviation. He proposed and developed Molecular Pharmacognosy and theories on formulation of authentic locality-bound Chinese Medicines, and established five models for preservation of endangered commonly used Chinese medical material resources. In 2020, he took up the leadership of the first national Chinese Medical Aide Team to Wuhan, was head of the Chinese Medicine Expert Team for Prevention and Control of COVID, as well as head of the relevant key science projects, and was the principal investigator for development of China’s first anti-COVID new Chinese Medicine drug with full IP.

Dr. Ann Hui On-wah, BBS, MBE

Dr. Ann Hui On-wah is a renowned film director, producer and screenwriter.  She graduated from the University of Hong Kong with a Bachelor of Arts (First Class Honour) and a Master of Arts.  She furthered her studies at the London Film School, graduating with a Diploma (First Class Honour).  After returning to Hong Kong, she had worked as an assistant to the eminent King Hu.  She had directed numerous documentaries, among other genres, for HKTVB, the HK Independent Commission Against Corruption, and Radio Hong Kong.  The genres her work traverses are as wide-ranging as the subject-matter:  they range from literary adaptation, martial art, semi-autobiography, women’s issue, social phenomenon, political changes to horror movies.  Outstandingly, she is the only director to have won six Hong Kong Film Awards for Best Director.  She has moreover won the 77th Venice International Film Festival’s Lifetime Achievement Award, in addition to having thrice won the Golden Horse Award for Best Director, thus rendering her as one of the only four most frequent winners of the Golden Horse Award for Best Director.

Professor Kishore Mahbubai

Professor Kishore Mahbubani is a renowned diplomat and scholar of Singapore.  Professor Kishore had served as Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Singapore’s Ambassador to the United Nations.  For five decades of his life, he has been offering himself to public service.  In his thirty-three years of diplomatic service, he had taken up many a challenging assignment.  No less so were his academic achievements.  Professor Kishore’s divergent contributions are perhaps best encapsulated in the United States Foreign Policy Association Medal conferred on him in June 2004, hailing him as “a gifted diplomat, a student of history and philosophy, a provocative writer and an intuitive thinker.”  Two months later, in August 2004, he was appointed Founding Dean of the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, National university of Singapore.  Notwithstanding the voluminous duties, Professor Kishore has been invited to speak at global conferences and is continuing his prolific output.

Professor Jeffrey D. Sachs

Professor Jeffrey Sachs is a renowned economist and University Professor of Columbia University.  He is currently Director of the Centre for Sustainable Development at Columbia University and was Special Advisor to the United Nations Secretaries-General Kofi Annan, Ban Ki-moon and Antόnio Guterres.  A bestseller writer and global leader of sustainable development, Professor Sachs has been advisor on economic development in Latin America, Eastern Europe, the former Yugoslavia, the former Soviet Union, Asia and Africa.  His economic reform proposals had resolved the crises which had threatened Bolivia, Poland and Russia.  He has advanced the concept of “clinical economics” as a measure to target specific circumstances of each country.  Professor Sachs has been collaborating with international organisations to assist developing countries to reduce poverty and national debt, and to control AIDS and other diseases.

Prof. Ching W. Tang

Professor Ching W. Tang is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, Founding Fellow of the Hong Kong Academy of Sciences, father of organic light-emitting diodes (OLED), and the first Chinese American to be conferred the Wolf Prize in chemistry.  This research focusses on the development of organic semi-conductors.  He is renowned for his invention of Organic Light-Emitting Diodes (OLED).  Since then, OLED technology has been successfully developed and applied to commercial uses, such as in screens and lighting.  Globally, Professor Tang is reputed for his invention of organic solar cells based on a new heterogeneous structure.  This important structure, or its corresponding changes, has been proven to be key to improving the performance of electronic devices.  For this reason, almost all organic optoelectronic devices, including OLEDs, are based on this structure.

Dr. Daniel Tse Chi-wai

Professor Tse Chi Wai is an outstanding educator.  For his thirty years of services in education and society in both Hong Kong and Macau, Professor Tse was appointed Justice of the Peace in 1977, Honorary Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire in 1986 and Honorary Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1991.  After the Chinese resumption of authority in Hong Kong, he was conferred the Gold Bauhinia Star by the Government of the Hong Kong SAR in 1998.  In 2014, he was awarded the Medal of Merit for Education by the Macao SAR Government.  His wide range of contributions to higher education in the international arena of Australia, China, the United Kingdom and the United States have earned him eleven honorary doctorates and three honorary professorships.

General Vasco Joaquim Rocha Vieira

General Vasco Joaquim Rocha Vieira was the 127th Governor of Macau, as well as last, under the reign of Portugal over Macao. The General, during his terms of office, paid nine visits to and worked closely with the People’s Republic of China, which ensured the successful handover of Macao, accomplished the “Three Transformations” and preserved the Portuguese culture in Macao. During his office, a number of large-size infrastructure projects were completed in Macao, including the Macao International Airport, Macao Cultural Center and the Lotus Bridge. He’s been granted numerous orders and decorations, including Portugal’s Grand Cross of the Order of Merit, Grand Cross of the Order of Infante D. Henrique, Commander of the Order of Aviz, Medal of Distinguished Services of Gold, Medal of Military Merit of 1st Class, Medal of Exemplary Behaviour of Gold, amongst many others. Besides these honors, General Vasco Joaquim Rocha Vieira also received many foreign awards, including Grand Cross of the Order of Rio Branco from Brazil, Commander of the National Order of Merit from France, and Commander of the Legion of Merit from the United States of America.

Professor Zhang Wenhong

Professor Zhang is a renowned expert on infectious disease control.  He is the Director of the National Centre for Infectious Disease, Director of the Department of Infectious Disease of the Huashan Hospital which is affiliated with Fudan University, Director of the Department of Internal Medicine of the Clinical School of Fudan University, Distinguished Professor of the Changjiang Scholars of the Ministry of Education, and Young and Middle-aged Expert of Extraordinary Contribution to the National Health Commission.  Currently, he is the Deputy Chairman of the Infectious Disease Branch of the Chinese Medical Association as well as the Deputy Chairman of the Internal Medicine Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctors’ Association.  Professor Zhang has been involved in preventative medicine and in the clinical analysis of infectious disease for quite some time.  He has been awarded the “National Award for Progressive Individuals in the Fight against the SARS-CoV2 Pandemic” as well as the “National Award for Distinguished Communist Party Member in the Fight against SARS-CoV2,” the “Second National Science and Technology Innovation Award,” the Shanghai Mayor’s Award (2021), and the “Shanghai City Award for Extraordinary Talents,” among others.
