Five students from the Faculty of Hospitality and Tourism Management majoring in International Tourism Management - Lin Xichen, Liu Yanjun, Liao Yuai, Zhai Songting and Zhang Xinyu - won the great prize in the preliminary competition of the "National University Students Tourism Innovation Competition for Hainan Free Trade Port" under the guidance of Dr. Zhang Yang. The competition was co-hosted by the China Tourism Education, Hainan Tourism Association, and Hainan University; and co-organized by the School of Tourism of Hainan University and Xiaoyao (Hainan) Air Travel Group.

The purpose of this competition is to promote the tourism development of the Hainan Free Trade Port. The competition started in March 2021, with 1,851 teams from 382 colleges and universities from all over the country who signed up.
The target group of this competition is college students. Taking Hainan as the event site, the competitors had to design a tourist route about three themes——“Tourist Road Around the Island”, “Tropical Rainforest Park and Countryside”, and “Coastal Tourism District”. Participating college students may continue to make continuous progress throughout the competition.
