On October 27, 2022, the President of Macau University of Science and Technology and President of the International Association for Hydro-environment Engineering and Research (IAHR) Chair Professor Joseph Hun-wei LEE, was invited as a keynote speaker to attend an event hosted by the Korean Ministry of Environment and the Korea Water Resources Corporation (K water), the 2022 International Symposium on Estuarine Ecology. The Korea Federation of Water Science and Engineering Societies organized the symposium at the BEXCO Convention and Exhibition Center in Busan.
The seminar gathered the world's top experts in the field of estuary and water conservancy, focused on establishing a scientifically based sustainable estuarine ecological environment, and publicized and promoted various achievements related to environmental restoration through a global network. Guests at the seminar also included: the Deputy Mayor of Busan City Byung-Jin Lee, K-water CEO Jae-Hyeon Park, the President of Sejong University Deg-Hyo Bae, international speakers from the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Japan, the United States, South Korea, and other countries. More than 200 experts and scholars attended the event.

At the seminar, President LEE gave a keynote speech on the topic “Do water quality models provide useful predictions?" The subject revolved around the WATERMAN coastal water quality forecast and management system and made a systematic review of its performance in the past decade. The main contents included beach water quality forecasting, prediction of algae and dissolved oxygen dynamics, and real-time forecasting of harmful algal blooms. The WATERMAN system has helped to provide practical approaches to climate change adaptation playing a critical role in future research on estuarine ecology. After the speech, President LEE actively responded to the questions made by experts and scholars and made further in-depth exchanges.
