M.U.S.T. Teachers and Students, and Middle School Students Witnessed the Successful Mission of “ Tianzhou-5” carting “Macao Student Science Satellite 1”

The cargo spacecraft “Tianzhou-5” carrying the “Macao Student Science Satellite 1” was successfully launched from the Wenchang Spacecraft Launch Site on the coast of the southern island province of Hainan at 10:03 a.m. (Beijing Time) on 12th November 2022.  This is one of the most exciting moments for the majority of Macao’s young people.

Speech Delivered by Chair Professor-Zhang Keke

At the live event, Chair Professor Zhang Keke, Associate Vice President of M.U.S.T. and Director of the State Key Laboratory of Lunar and Planetary Sciences, delivered a speech. He said that in accordance with the responsibilities assigned by the China National Space Administration, the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao S.A.R.  and the Macao Special Administrative Region Government, the facilities, equipment, and human resources of the State Key Laboratory of Lunar and Planetary Sciences will be fully utilized to support the popular science satellite’s space science education activities aimed at the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, and even the vast number of young people on both sides of the Cross-Strait, Hong Kong, and Macao.

Afterward, Assistant Professor Ou JiaMing of the State Key Laboratory of Lunar and Planetary Sciences of M.U.S.T. introduced the functions, basic parameters, loading conditions, and achievable functions of the “Macao Student Science Satellite 1”. Senior Engineer Xiao JianFeng, Director of Engineering and Technology of Macao Satellite Project of M.U.S.T., introduced the launch, release plan and the planning of science popularization applications for the “Macao Student Science Satellite 1”. In the end, the guests and students visited the satellite ground station, the State Key Laboratory of Lunar and Planetary Sciences, and the Data Center for Science and Application of Macau Satellites.

The "Macao Student Science Satellite 1" project was born with the strong support of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao S.A.R. and the Chain National Space Administration, and the great attention of the Macao Special Administrative Region Government. The DFH Satellite Company Limited officially launched the development project “Macao Student Science Satellite” in December 2021. The State Key Laboratory of Lunar and Planetary Sciences of Macau University of Science and Technology, together with the Chinese Educators’ Association of Macau, and the Macao Catholic Schools Association successfully held the "Ceremony of Competition Award, Naming and Launching of Macao’s First Science Satellite" in 19th March 2022. The satellite was officially named “Macao Student Science Satellite 1” and was approved to launch by the China Manned Space Engineering Office via the “Tianzhou-5” cargo spacecraft in August 2022. 

The "Macao Student Science Satellite 1" project aims to jointly organize local youth representatives to participate in the design, test, launch, and related scientific research activities of the first Macao science satellite. It will effectively promote in-depth cooperation and interaction between the mainland and Macao in the field of aerospace science education, deepen the understanding of local schools and scientific groups on the development of national space technology, enhance the elements of technological innovation and the vitality of technological innovation, and enhance the interest and scientific literacy of young people in Macao.
