Macau University of Science and Technology held the 2013/2014 Opening Ceremony at 11.00 am in the Gymnasium of the University on Saturday, September 7. More than 2000 teachers and students attended the grand ceremony. In the ceremony, sixteen organizations conferred scholarships and prize certificates on excellent students of MUST, seven faculties conferred the Dean’s List Scholarships on their students, and the university also conferred three University Awards, the University Council Scholarship, the Bank of China Research Award, the Nam Kwong Fund Endowed Professor Certificate and Teaching Excellence Awards.

There are approximately 3000 new students entering MUST this academic year; the number of undergraduates is around the same as last year while the number of postgraduates has increased by 13%. The growth of postgraduate students will help advance Macao’s academic research. MUST has also welcomed 50 new teaching and research staff and has invited renowned experts and scholars to take up leadership positions in the faculties, aiming to develop the teaching and research work of the university to a higher level. Professor Shen Si Bao, Dean of the Faculty of Law who took office this September, is now a member of the Social Science Committee and the Department of Legal Studies of the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China; he is also the director of the Chinese Research Society of International Economic Law. Prof. Shen Si Bao’s joining MUST will enable the legal programs of MUST to become more distinctive and international, and help the university cultivate more professional legal talents to contribute to the social and economic development of the two straits and four regions.

In his speech for the Opening Ceremony, President Chair Professor Liu Liang noted that with the great support of the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) government, the Macao community and the public, the MUST Foundation, the University Council and University Advisory Committee, and the joint efforts of all the staff and students of MUST, the university has been ranked by the Shanghai Jiao Tong University as in the Top 100 Universities in the cross-strait region, making it the youngest university in the top one hundred. In the new academic year, MUST will continue to uphold its motto of “dedication to practical studies, enhancement of knowledge, ability and quality”, commit itself to its mission to “enhance cultural exchange, cultivate talents, stimulate economic development and promote social progress”, and anchor itself to the two core drivers of the development of the university – “quality” and “innovation”. Further, based on the special characteristics and unique strengths of Macao and MUST, the university will also further adjust and optimize its program structure and curricula so as to provide more higher education programs that are of high quality and which meet the needs of the society, increase its engagement in conducting excellent cross-disciplinary and innovative research, expand high-level regional and international collaborations in terms of teaching and research, and move the university upward towards being a prestigious university with international influence and recognition.

President Chair Professor Liu Liang advised the students to cultivate a modest and tolerant attitude, embrace compassion and care for others and society, show respect for themselves and others, learn to appreciate and draw on others’ strengths and wisdom, and maintain amicable and harmonious interpersonal relationships so that they can enjoy the beauty of university life, and whilst making dual progress in both knowledge and character-building.
