Doctor of Philosophy in Earth and Planetary Sciences Study Plan

 地球與行星科學博士學位課程學習計劃

I. Program Duration / 課程期限

The normal study period of Doctor of Philosophy in Earth and Planetary Sciences program is 3 years. The maximum study period is 6 years. 

本課程正常修業期為3年，最長修業期為6年。

IV. Major / 課程所包括的研究方向

Students perform research in the following fields (but not limited to) with data from planetary exploration:

在導師的指導下主要從（但不限於）以下四個研究方向進行博士學位論文的選題:

1）Planetary geology research (geomorphology and structure) based on geological methods; 
      以地質學為基礎並選擇行星地質（地形地貌和結構）為研究方向；

2）Planetary geology research (chemical composition and evolution) based on geochemistry and remote sensing methods;
      以地球化學及遙感技術等為基礎並選擇行星地質（化學成分和演化）為研究方向；

3）Planetary atmosphere and space environment based on physics and atmospheric science;
      以物理學及大氣科學為基礎並選擇以行星大氣與空間環境為研究方向;

4）Research and observation on asteroids and comets based on astronomical methods.
      以天文學為基礎並選擇小天體研究及觀測為研究方向。

V. Course Structure / 課程設置

VI. Teaching Requirements / 學習要求

1. Students are required to complete one core courses from Table 1, three major courses from Table 2, and academic activities (ten times of attendance) from Table 4 during the first two semesters to gain 13 credits.
   第一、二學期修讀完成學習計劃規定的表(一)中的1門基礎必修科目和表(二)中的3門專業範疇科目、表(四)中的學術活動(須參加不少於10次學術活動)，共計13學分。
2. Students can only submit his/her dissertation title for confirmation upon the completion of the aforementioned 13 credits under Table 1, 2 and 4. The minimum word count for the dissertation is 100,000. The overall process should follow the dissertation composition flow established by the faculty.
   撰寫一篇符合學校要求且不少於10萬字的原創論文並進行論文答辯，博士學位論文必須通過評審及論文答辯。
3. After completing required courses, students can start writing the thesis proposal. Students can continue their dissertation research and writing upon completion of thesis proposal defense.
   學生在修讀完授課科目並取得學分後，需撰寫開題報告並完成開題答辯。完成開題答辯後，方可繼續博士論文的研究和寫作。
4. After finishing each course, students will be assessed based on regulations established by the instructor and the Faculty.
   學生在每門科目上課結束後，須進行考核，考核按授課老師及學院的規定方式進行。
5. In general, in order to achieve the minimum requirement for applying oral defense for graduation, each student has to publish at least two papers in international English journals of SCI, one of which must be the first author. Students do not meet the above requirement are required to get approval and recommendation from their thesis supervisors and go through an assessment process by the Examination Committee of SSI. Those students have been considered to meet related level of the above requirement by the Examination Committee of SSI are still able to apply for thesis oral defense.
   一般情況下，學生需在國際SCI收錄的英文期刊發表研究論文至少2篇，其中1篇必須為第一作者，方可申請學位論文答辯。不符合上述條件的學生，由指導教師審查、推薦，經研究所考試委員會評鑒，認為達到上述要求之相當水平者方可申請學位論文答辯。

VII. Study Time / 學習時間

The duration for taking all courses is 12 months and no less than 12 months of dissertation composition, up to 24 months. Classes will generally be scheduled at daytime (9:00-18:00) in weekdays or weekend.

科目修讀時間為12個月，論文寫作時間一般為12個月，最長為24個月。課堂一般安排在星期一至星期五日間或週末上課。

VIII. Graduation Requirements / 畢業資格

Upon approval from the Senate of the University, a Doctoral Degree will be conferred on a student when he or she has:

學生須符合下列各項規定，並經大學學術及教學委員會通過可獲頒發博士學位：

1. Completed and met the requirements prescribed in the study plan of his or her program within the specific study period, and achieved a cumulative GPA of 2.50 or above (excluding dissertation)
   在所屬課程之修業期內完成及通過學習計劃的要求，各科目成績（不含學位論文成績）累計平均積點不低於2.50*；
2. Abided by the regulations of the University
   遵守大學的修讀守則；
3. Cleared all fees and charges and returned all University’s property and equipment borrowed
   繳清指定費用及歸還所借的大學財物。
