On October 25-26, 2014, MUST English Debating Team participated in the 1st Macao BP Debate Open, which was hosted by Macau English Debating Association. MUST sent three teams including members Dong Fangjun, Su Hang, Shen Ge, Zhang Ruohua, Jin Yali, and Li Wenfei, some fresh members also went watched the competition which was held at the Hengqin New Campus of the University of Macau. It had been the first time to hold Debate Open in Macao since Macao English debate became biennia. The competition with its high level attracted more than 30 debate teams from colleges and universities of Hong Kong, Macau and mainland, meanwhile, it also invited judges and debaters of highest level in Asian regions led by Loke Wing Fatt, the president of SAID. The motions involved many hot international and social issues such as “Should sin taxes be imposed on meat eating”, “Whether the military training is applicable to the Macao high school students”, “The vicious competition in advertising”, “Should the Nobel peace prize be awarded”, “The athletes' crimes”, “Hong Kong protesters occupy Central”, “Citizens’ right to vote” and “Issues about that children ran away from home”, which were rather up-to-date. After 5 preliminary rounds, 16 debating teams stood out in the competition and entered the finals. The teams that advanced to finals came from the University of Hong Kong, the Chinese University of Hong Kong and University of Macau, and the team U and 35 from University of Macau crowned in the competition at last. Although MUST English Debating Team failed getting to the final, yet they had a lot of room for improvement, and they had gained valuable experience and skills through learning from judges’ comments and fellow debaters, moreover, the players also realized themselves’ weakness and others’ strength and determined to make greater efforts in the following training and preparation and strived to make greater progress.
