Sponsored and supported by MacaoSAR Government, Macao Foundation, MUST Foundation, and MUST President’s Office, MUST English Debating Team sent Shen Ge and Dong Fangjun as representatives to participate in “the 5th Hong Kong International English Debate Open” hosted in the City University of Hong Kong on November1-3, 2014.
The competition with such high quality, on a large scale attracted 125 teams composed of the best debaters from South Korea, Japan, Singapore, the Philippines, Hong Kong, Taiwan, mainland China, Malaysia and Portugal to gather in Hong Kong. Also the world-class judges led by Loke Wing Fatt, the president of Singapore Association for Inter-varsity Debating come from the United States, South Korea, the Philippines, Japan, Thailand and so on.
It was actually the second time for MUST to join the competition as an official team. MUST English debaters trained very hard before the contest and competed with many teams from the National University of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University, Keio University, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the University of Hong Kong and Shanghai University of Finance and Economics. Ultimately, MUST English debating team scored high of nine points, and two Indian debaters from Nanyang Technological University crowned in the contest and a Singaporean debater from Peking University won the Best Debater Award.
The motions debaters argued in the contest cover a large scope involving freedom of religious speech, personal privacy rights, the scope of the company's compensation, retirement age limit etc. which are very profound and up-to-date. MUST English debaters through communicating and discussing with debaters and judges of other regions and countries have better understanding and deeper love of debating, and hope that they can create brilliant achievements in the future by greater efforts.
