The “2015 Kiang Wu Cup” was of a friendly inter-varsity debate competition which was held in Kiang Wu Nursing College of Macau on March 15, 2015. Macau debating teams gathered to compete with each other. MUST Putonghua debaters beat the defending champion the University of Macau and crowned, and Li Yuxi, a sophomore of the law school won the Best Debater Award.
This year, the Kiang Wu Cup of debate competition aims to provide a larger platform for enhancing exchanges between fresh debaters from different universities and cultivate students’ logical thinking ability, language ability and in-game response ability. Keeping abreast of the times, the motions involved many hot issues such as social reforms in the political, social and cultural point of view, representing debaters’ active thinking; and younger generation of rich and diverse knowledge expressed their understanding of the society. The host invited five teams including six groups of debaters from the University of Macau, Macau University of Science and Technology, the City University of Macau, Macao Polytechnic Institute and Institute for Tourism Studies.
The motions involve various profound and realistic topics such as the role of the student movement in social reform, the sound judicial system, the promoters of social progress, etc. In second round, MUST team as the opposition side sent Yi Xin, Wei Xiao, Zheng Yuting and Li Yuxi to compete with debaters from UM under the controversial motion —“Mercy death should be legalized or not”. The contest was just like a war of words, and the MUST fourth debater Li Yuxi won the Best Debater Award with views that people should cherish and take their lives seriously moved the audience and judges.
