Zhao Yu Pei, Doctor of Medicine honoris causa


Professor Zhao Yu Pei is a professor in surgery, chief physician, Ph.D. supervisor, the leader of general surgery in China and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences elected in 2011. Professor Zhao was the Director of the Basic Surgeries Unit of Peking Union Medical College Hospital from 2007 to 2020. He is currently the Honorary President of Perking Union Medical College Hospital, President of Chinese Medical Association, Director of the surgery sub-committee of the Chinese Medical Association, Director of the national pancreatic surgery division, general editor of Chinese Journal of Surgery, chief editor of Journal of Pancreatology, and editor or honorary editor of over a dozen surgery journals. He has been awarded Honorary Fellowship by the International College of Surgeons, American College of Surgeons, Royal College of Surgeons, the College of Surgeons of Hong Kong, and Fellowship Ad Hominen by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

Professor Zhao has accomplished innovative work in hepatopancreatology, gastroenterology, thyroid diseases and made spectacular achievements in pancreatic diseases. He established “Pancreatic Cancer Treatment Easy Access” which standardized domestic process of pancreatic cancer diagnosis and treatment. He founded the first consulting center for pancreatic disease in China that enabled patients’ timely access to the best therapeutic strategies through multi-disciplinary treatment (MDT). His optimization of the indications and procedures of surgeries and the clinical support for the perioperative period dramatically reduced mortality and complications of pancreatic cancer surgeries. The transjejunal gastrostomy which he invented also minimized complications of indwelled stomach tubes. He carried out clinical research on the diagnosis and surgical treatment of pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors and successfully completed China’s first laparoscopic resection of insulinoma and became a pioneer in employing robotics for insulinoma surgeries in China. He conducted substantial basic research about the complex problems of the diagnosis, treatment of pancreatic cancer and contributed to advancing the progress and development of pancreatic surgeries with his guidance and collaborations with his fellow pancreatic surgeons. He is the leader in formulating the guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of pancreatic cancer by the Chinese Medical Association, the national industry standard for the diagnosis and treatment of pancreatic cancer of the Ministry of Health. He led sixteen pancreatic surgery centers nationwide to undertake several national key research projects, such as 863, 973, science and technology support plan, etc. With his establishment of the big data center for pancreatic diseases in China, he conducted prospective clinical research on critical problems in the diagnosis and treatment of pancreatic cancer and constructed a national technological platform for improving the diagnosis and treatment of pancreatic cancer.

Professor Zhao was the Deputy Director and then Director of the Basic Surgeries Unit of Peking Union Medical College Hospital, Deputy Director, Vice Dean and Dean of the Surgery Department, Deputy Director and Concurrently Leader of the Experts’ Group of Central Health Committee, Vice Chairman of the 9th China Association for Science and Technology, Vice President, and Standing Vice President of the Chinese Medical Association. He is also the Vice Chairman of the International Gastrointestinal and Hepatobiliary Surgery Association, and Chairman of the 16th Asian Surgical Association and the alternate member of the 18th and 19th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC). Professor Zhao has received many awards, including two times 2nd Place of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, 1st Prize of Chinese Medical Science and Technology Progress Award, The Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation Science and Technology Progress Award, etc. The Pancreatology journal, which he serves as Chief Editor, has been selected by the National Press and Publication Administration to be a “Three 100s” original book publication project and was awarded Zhou Guangzhao Clinical Physician Award and Chinese Physician Award and National Labor Medal, etc.
