Zhu Dao Ben, Doctor of Science honoris causa


Professor Zhu Dao Ben is a renowned Chinese chemist, academician of the Third World Academy of Sciences, and academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He graduated in the East China University of Science and Technology. From 1968 he began his career in the Institute of Chemistry at the Chinese Academy of Sciences and held successively positions of research assistant, research associate and research professor. He was a visiting scientist at the Max-Planck Institute for Medical Research, Heidelberg, Germany.

Professor Zhu has been dedicated to studies of molecular materials and devices, including design, synthesis, and chemical and physical characterization and applications of new π-conjugated systems, that have led to a series of research outputs of international advanced quality, and publication of more than 500 peer reviewed papers in international journals. For his research achievements, he was awarded Second-class prizes of National Natural Sciences of China four times and the Tan Kah Kee Science Award.

Professor Zhu served as the Vice-Director of the Institute of Chemistry and the Chinese Academy of Sciences from 1988 to 1992, and as the Director from 1992 to 2000.  Since 1987 he has been the Director of the Organic Solids Laboratory, Institute of Chemistry, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences. At the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Professor Zhu concurrently has held many academic positions such as member of the Presidium of the Academic Divisions of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Director of the Division of Chemistry, Vice-Director of Academic Committee and Vice-President of the Academic Degrees Evaluation Committee (before 2012), Dean of the Postgraduate Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering (2008-2012), and Chairman of the Fourth Committee for Consultation and Evaluation.

Other positions formerly held by Professor Zhu include Vice-President of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (2000-2008), Consultant of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (2008-2013) and President of the Chinese Chemical Society (1994-1998). Additionally, he is a Fellow of British Royal Society of Chemistry, and serves as a member of the editorial board of many learned journals and committees, including Applied Physics A, Chemistry - An Asian Journal, Marcromolecular Rapid Communications, Polymer Reviews and Molecular Physics Reports, the International Advisory Committee of the Institute of Molecular Functional Materials at the University of Hong Kong, and the International Advisory Committee of ARC Centre of Excellence for Electromaterials Science. He is also a Distinguished Visiting Professor of the Hong Kong Baptist University and Adjunct Professor of Tsinghua University, Peking University, Fudan University, Wuhan University and East China University of Science and Technology.
