Jeffrey D. Sachs, Doctor of Economics honoris causa


Professor Jeffrey Sachs is a renowned economist and University Professor of Columbia University. He is currently Director of the Centre for Sustainable Development at Columbia University and was Special Advisor to the United Nations Secretaries-General Kofi Annan, Ban Ki-moon and Antόnio Guterres. A bestseller writer and global leader of sustainable development, Professor Sachs has been advisor on economic development in Latin America, Eastern Europe, the former Yugoslavia, the former Soviet Union, Asia and Africa. His economic reform proposals had resolved the crises which had threatened Bolivia, Poland and Russia. He has advanced the concept of “clinical economics” as a measure to target specific circumstances of each country. Professor Sachs has been collaborating with international organisations to assist developing countries to reduce poverty and national debt, and to control AIDS and other diseases.
