Ching W. Tang, Doctor of Science honoris causa

Professor Ching W. Tang is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, Founding Fellow of the Hong Kong Academy of Sciences, father of organic light-emitting diodes (OLED), and the first Chinese American to be conferred the Wolf Prize in chemistry. This research focusses on the development of organic semi-conductors. He is renowned for his invention of Organic Light-Emitting Diodes (OLED). Since then, OLED technology has been successfully developed and applied to commercial uses, such as in screens and lighting. Globally, Professor Tang is reputed for his invention of organic solar cells based on a new heterogeneous structure. This important structure, or its corresponding changes, has been proven to be key to improving the performance of electronic devices. For this reason, almost all organic optoelectronic devices, including OLEDs, are based on this structure.
