A tiny seed changed the world, a great contemporary agriculturalist, ended the hunger of humans, a magnanimous heart has established a new milestone in the history of science.

Yuan Longping, humble in appearance, yet a passionate scientist as well as an academician of both the Chinese Academy of Engineering and the American Academy of Science, has dedicated himself since the 1960s to tackling the world-wide problem of cultivating excellent rice species. Having led his assistants to discover the naturally-mutated hybrid rice and finding the androecium-sterile rice, he broke free of traditional theoretical bonds of “Non-Superiority in Rice and Self-Pollination Crops”, greatly enriched genetic breeding theories, and opened the door to the rice kingdom marked by increasing production and yield. Acknowledged as “The Father of Hybrid Rice”, he has discovered many effective solutions to overcome hunger through scientific techniques.

Science exploration is boundless. With his greatest wish to develop hybrid rice, which will benefit mankind, Prof. Yuan is now leading his scientific team, consistently bringing forward innovations and ushering us into a world of sufficient food and an era of plenty.

From today onwards, the name of Yuan Long Ping will be closely associated with Macao University of Science and Technology, and this is the honor of the university.
