Zhong Nan Shan, Doctor of Medicine honoris causa

Born into a medical family, Prof. Zhong Nan Shan has long devoted himself to research into Respiratory Diseases. Due to his great achievements in research on the relationship between hyperoxia-hypoxia and pulmonary circulation, he became the backbone of medical organizations and academic institutions both at home and abroad. He is now an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

With the outbreak of SARS in 2003, he was propelled into the public eye. In spite of the panic, he spoke against some incorrect official opinion, carefully investigated the cause of the disease, taking a huge risk of being infected, and finally worked out the effective treatment, which saved a very large number of people.

He was thus given the honor of receiving the title of Special Contributor to the Anti-SARS Campaign, awarded the National Labor Medal and appointed President of the Chinese Medicine Association. However, these titles and awards are far from adequate to measure his contribution. And the best reward for him is that 90% of those polled believe he is a real hero.

Let us welcome Prof. Zhong Nan Shan, one of the first winners of MUST Honorary Doctorate.
