Zhang Xing Dong, Doctor of Science honoris causa

Professor Zhang Xing Dong started doing research in the field of laser crystal, superhard material, and high pressure physics, and has participated in the development of super hard material CBN (Cubic Boron Nitride), high strength man-made polycrystalline diamond, and hard layer ultradeep drill. Later, he switched his research interests to biomaterials, and became a pioneer in our country’s development of biomaterials; he became the first to develop world-leading bioactive artificial bone, coated dental implant, and artificial hip joint. He led his team to the discovery of osteo-induction and built up the theoretical prototype, and initiated a new generation of artificial bone – osteo-inductive bone; he proposed the “Tissue Inducing Biomaterials” hypothesis, that is, by optimization of design, life-less biomaterials can induce regeneration or formulation of living tissues and organs, and therefore made available new directions for development of biomaterials.

He has also made significant contributions to China’s and the world’s biomaterials development; he is behind the writing of many of our country’s plans and implementation schemes on biomaterials development; he is an important founder of the Chinese Society for Biomaterials and the International Union of Societies for Biomaterials Science and Engineering (IUSBSE); he chaired the 9th World Biomaterials Congress and initiated the China-Europe, China-US, Asian series of international biomaterials conferences; he campaigned for the integration of industry, education, research, medicine, and finance, introducing biomaterials industrial demonstration parks that feature an entire chain of innovations and bring together products, technological innovation and marketing of clinic applications, and ensuring the effective linkage of “science research and industry”; this, without doubt, is especially enlightening for Macau science and technology industry and its economic development.

In 2007, he was elected academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering; in 2014, he was elected Foreign Fellow of the National Academy of Engineering, U.S.A.; in 2015, he was elected Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering. He currently serves as Chairman of the International Union of Societies for Biomaterials Science and Engineering, IUSBSE, and Commissioner of the Executive Committee of the Medical Devices Classification Technique Committee, China Food and Drug Administration (CFDA).

With his tremendous efforts, the ingenious biomaterial idea that we can accomplish regeneration in a way that best simulates generation is now on the way of becoming a reality. He is Professor Zhang Xing Dong, who is highly acclaimed and highly recognized in Chinese and international biomaterials fields.
